Big Fourth Inning Keys Win Over LIU

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Towson University softball team earned another split on the second day of the Michelle Smith Pediatric Cancer Spring Invitational hosted by the University of South Florida.
 
After dropping a 5-4 decision to Wichita State in the opening game of the day, the Tigers roared back to beat Long Island 8-3. Towson raised its season record to 11-9 overall.
 
How It Happened Wichita State
  • There were two ties and four lead changes.
  • Chloe Poulich led Towson with two hits.
  • Poulich scored the first run of the game in the second inning after her leadoff double.
  • Jess DeBreo's RBI single scored Poulich, who had a run-scoring hit in the fifth that gave Towson a 2-1 lead.
  • Nicole Kidwiler had a two-out RBI triple in the sixth inning that scored Riley Thies.
  • Kidwiler scored on the play following an error to give the Tigers a 4-2 advantage.
  • Madison Perrigan's three run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning was the difference.
 
How It Happened Long Island University
  • Towson scored five runs in the fourth inning.
  • Julia Smith-Harrington and Nicole Stockinger had two hits each to lead the Tiger offense.
  • Stockinger and Riley Thies also drove in a pair of runs.
  • Both of Stockinger's hits – a first inning double and a third-inning single -- produced runs.
  • Towson's top four hitters combined for six of its eight hits.
  • Kendall Arcia had a RBI double in the fourth inning.
  • Sara Johnson was the winning pitcher.
  • It was Johnson's fifth complete game of the season.
