STORRS, Conn. – The Towson University women's basketball team made history Friday night with the program's first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers captured the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) crown last weekend and grabbed a berth into the big dance, the first time a Towson women's team did so.
Junior
Q. Murray recorded five assists for the 17th time this season, recording 147 assists on the year. The Baltimore, Maryland native now has set a record for assists in a single season, previously was 143.
The Tigers were led by redshirt sophomore
Kionna Jeter with 20 points, her 14th game of the year with at least 20 points and the 28th double-figure scoring game for the guard.
The No. 15 seeded Towson fell at No. 2 seeded UConn 110-61.
How it Happened
- After losing the first quarter with a 24-point deficit, Towson fought back in the second quarter and played a strong second half.
- Entering the second quarter, Jeter had yet to score, but the Spartanburg, South Carolina native scored 11 and grabbed two rebounds and a steal as the Tigers posted 17 points.
- Coming out of the halftime locker room, the road team played an almost evenly matched third period. Both Towson and UConn shot 50 percent from the field, both teams made 8-of-16.
- Once again, Jeter led the team in scoring in the quarter but freshman Janeen Camp came off the bench and scored four points and a team-high five boards.
- There was a three minute, 25 second stretch in the third where the Tigers held the Huskies scoreless as Towson scored 20 points to UConn's 26.
- By the end of the third quarter, every Tiger player who touched the court had scored.
- Towson trailed 90-47 entering the fourth, and saw points from Jeter, Nukiya Mayo, Danielle Durjan, Maia Lee and Shavonne Smith.
- The Tigers held the Huskies to a 47.1 field goal percentage, their lowest of the day.
Beyond the Box
- Kionna Jeter not only recorded another 20-point game, she accomplished something only 10 other players have done this year. In 2018-19, 11 total players scored 20 points against UConn, including Jeter.
- Jeter now has 572 points on the year and is second all-time in single season points.
- With seven steals today she has 89 on the year, tied for sixth all-time in single season steals. She is now fifth all-time in single season three-point field goals made with 60.
- Nukiya Mayo now has 50 blocks for the year, she moves up to take eight in the single-season blocks category.
- Janeen Camp recorded her eighth game with at least eight rebounds as she led the Tigers against UConn.
Towson has concluded one of the best seasons in program history. This team is one of two to win at least 20 games, the first to reach the NCAA Tournament, the first to win the CAA Championship and the first winning season in 10 years.
