Baseball Falls in Series Finale at FGCU

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Towson University baseball team (3-22) had an early lead at Florida Gulf Coast (19-8) but fell in the final contest of the three-game series 20-3 in Fort Myers.

Towson's early 3-2 lead after one-and-a-half innings, spearheaded by a two-run double by Dirk Masters, did not hold as FGCU took the lead in the bottom of the second and held the rest of the way.

Key Stats:
  • Dirk Masters was perfect from the plate, hitting 3-for-3 with a two-run double in the second inning.  Richard Miller was 1-for-3, notching an RBI while Isaiah Winikur was 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
  • The loss went to Oluwasayo Kintunde (0-2), who had two innings with five runs, only three earned, and two strikeouts.  Cam Clark pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
  • For FGCU, Kohl Gilmore went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI while Elijah Eusebio and Jay Hayes had home runs.  Tyler Shuck (5-0) got the victory, having three runs in three innings.
How it Happened:
  • Towson manufactured a run in the first inning as Javon Fields walked, took second on a ground out and third on another ground out.  Richard Miller cam up with two outs and grounded a single through the hole of the right side to bring in Fields and make it 1-0 Towson.
  • FGCU took advantage of a couple of free passes and a throwing error to score two runs in the bottom of the first to lead 2-1.
  • The Tigers struck right back after Brad Powers walked and Isaiah Winikur belted a double to left to put second and third with one out.  Dirk Masters came up and lined a double down the left field line, scoring Powers and Winikur for a 3-2 Towson advantage.
  • The home team got back the lead with a pair of two-out RBI hits, including a two-run triple by Marc Coffers, to go ahead 5-3.  Later in the fourth, a Jay Hayes grand slam made it 9-3 FGCU.
  • Joe Enea entered in relief and threw and 1-2-3 fifth inning, but the Eagles held the lead the rest of the game.  FGCU scored 11 more runs to finish the game and win 20-3.
Up Next:
Towson plays its next six games at home, beginning with a mid-week rematch against George Washington on Wednesday, April 3rd at 3 p.m. at Schuerholz Park.
