FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Towson University baseball team (3-22) had an early lead at Florida Gulf Coast (19-8) but fell in the final contest of the three-game series 20-3 in Fort Myers.
Towson's early 3-2 lead after one-and-a-half innings, spearheaded by a two-run double by
Dirk Masters, did not hold as FGCU took the lead in the bottom of the second and held the rest of the way.
Key Stats:
- Dirk Masters was perfect from the plate, hitting 3-for-3 with a two-run double in the second inning. Richard Miller was 1-for-3, notching an RBI while Isaiah Winikur was 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
- The loss went to Oluwasayo Kintunde (0-2), who had two innings with five runs, only three earned, and two strikeouts. Cam Clark pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
- For FGCU, Kohl Gilmore went 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBI while Elijah Eusebio and Jay Hayes had home runs. Tyler Shuck (5-0) got the victory, having three runs in three innings.
How it Happened:
- Towson manufactured a run in the first inning as Javon Fields walked, took second on a ground out and third on another ground out. Richard Miller cam up with two outs and grounded a single through the hole of the right side to bring in Fields and make it 1-0 Towson.
- FGCU took advantage of a couple of free passes and a throwing error to score two runs in the bottom of the first to lead 2-1.
- The Tigers struck right back after Brad Powers walked and Isaiah Winikur belted a double to left to put second and third with one out. Dirk Masters came up and lined a double down the left field line, scoring Powers and Winikur for a 3-2 Towson advantage.
- The home team got back the lead with a pair of two-out RBI hits, including a two-run triple by Marc Coffers, to go ahead 5-3. Later in the fourth, a Jay Hayes grand slam made it 9-3 FGCU.
- Joe Enea entered in relief and threw and 1-2-3 fifth inning, but the Eagles held the lead the rest of the game. FGCU scored 11 more runs to finish the game and win 20-3.
