Baseball Comes Back to Tie, Edged Late by George Washington

TOWSON, Md. – In a thrilling game at Schuerholz Park, the Towson University baseball team (3-23) came back in the seventh to tie George Washington (16-12), but an unearned run in the eighth resulted in the Tigers falling 4-3.

Down 3-1 in the seventh, RBI singles by Dirk Masters and Javon Fields tied the game for Towson.  GW got a runner on via error in the eighth and got him to score.  Towson stranded a runner on third in the bottom of the eighth to narrowly fall short.

Key Stats:
  • Javon Fields earned a multi-hit game and reached base three times, going 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI.  Brad Powers was 1-for-3 with a double, a run and a walk while Dirk Masters finished 1-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Dallas Repine got a no-decision in his start, allowing two runs in three innings.  Four Towson pitchers had no runs allowed in relief: David Tiskevics, Kody Reeser, Matt Watters and John Cranston.  The loss went to Joe Enea (0-1) with an unearned run in the eighth.
  • For GW, Nate Fassnacht had two home runs in a 3-for-3 game, tallying two runs, three RBI, a walk and two stolen bases.  Pat Knight (1-2) got the win in relief despite a blown save while Jaret Edwards got the save with a scoreless ninth.
How it Happened:
  • A heads-up play gave Towson its first run in the bottom of the first: a pickoff attempt on Javon Fields at first was thrown into right field.  Fields advanced three bases on the error to score, making it 1-0 Tigers.
  • In the top of the third, with the wind blowing fiercely to right, Nate Fassnacht hit a deep fly ball that arced around the foul pole for a two-run home run, pushing GW ahead 2-1.  Later in the top of the sixth, Fassnacht hit another home run, this one to left, to put the Colonials up 3-1.
  • Towson looks to stage its comeback in the bottom of the seventh.  With first and third and two out, Dirk Masters lined a ball over the jumping second baseman to bring in a run and pull Towson within one. Next batter, Fields belted a single to right-center, bringing in Brad Powers to tie the game at 3-3.
  • The next inning, a batter reached on an error, then got to third on a couple of wild pitches.  Steve Barmakian hit a deep ball to left for a sacrifice fly, bringing in the runner and getting GW a 4-3 lead.
  • Towson threatened in the bottom of the eighth as Jack Rotteveel walked and got to third, but GW got out of the inning without a run scoring, eventually winning 4-3.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Javon Fields earned his ninth multi-hit game of the season.
  • Brad Powers has now reached base in his last six games.
