TOWSON, Md. – In a thrilling game at Schuerholz Park, the Towson University baseball team (3-23) came back in the seventh to tie George Washington (16-12), but an unearned run in the eighth resulted in the Tigers falling 4-3.
Down 3-1 in the seventh, RBI singles by
Dirk Masters and
Javon Fields tied the game for Towson. GW got a runner on via error in the eighth and got him to score. Towson stranded a runner on third in the bottom of the eighth to narrowly fall short.
Key Stats:
- Javon Fields earned a multi-hit game and reached base three times, going 2-for-4 with a walk and an RBI. Brad Powers was 1-for-3 with a double, a run and a walk while Dirk Masters finished 1-for-4 with an RBI.
- Dallas Repine got a no-decision in his start, allowing two runs in three innings. Four Towson pitchers had no runs allowed in relief: David Tiskevics, Kody Reeser, Matt Watters and John Cranston. The loss went to Joe Enea (0-1) with an unearned run in the eighth.
- For GW, Nate Fassnacht had two home runs in a 3-for-3 game, tallying two runs, three RBI, a walk and two stolen bases. Pat Knight (1-2) got the win in relief despite a blown save while Jaret Edwards got the save with a scoreless ninth.
How it Happened:
- A heads-up play gave Towson its first run in the bottom of the first: a pickoff attempt on Javon Fields at first was thrown into right field. Fields advanced three bases on the error to score, making it 1-0 Tigers.
- In the top of the third, with the wind blowing fiercely to right, Nate Fassnacht hit a deep fly ball that arced around the foul pole for a two-run home run, pushing GW ahead 2-1. Later in the top of the sixth, Fassnacht hit another home run, this one to left, to put the Colonials up 3-1.
- Towson looks to stage its comeback in the bottom of the seventh. With first and third and two out, Dirk Masters lined a ball over the jumping second baseman to bring in a run and pull Towson within one. Next batter, Fields belted a single to right-center, bringing in Brad Powers to tie the game at 3-3.
- The next inning, a batter reached on an error, then got to third on a couple of wild pitches. Steve Barmakian hit a deep ball to left for a sacrifice fly, bringing in the runner and getting GW a 4-3 lead.
- Towson threatened in the bottom of the eighth as Jack Rotteveel walked and got to third, but GW got out of the inning without a run scoring, eventually winning 4-3.
