Towson Set For CAA Tournament Opener Against James Madison

 
TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University men's basketball team starts its postseason journey by competing against the James Madison in the 2019 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament presented by Jersey Mike's.

Towson as #9 Seed
  • Towson is entering the tournament as the No. 9 seed for the fourth time.
  • Towson is 2-1 as a No. 9 seed.
  • Towson defeated Hofstra, 81-66, in 2008, and William & Mary, 70-65, in 2004. The Tigers lost to Elon, 74-69 in overtime in 2009.
 
CAA Tournament Experience
  • Seniors Jordan McNeil, Alex Thomas and redshirt junior Dennis Tunstall are the only Tigers with CAA Tournament experience.
  • McNeil and Thomas have played in four CAA tournament games while Tunstall has participated in three games.
  • McNeil scored 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting in 13 minutes in an 82-54 win over Northeastern in the CAA quarterfinals in 2017.
  • Thomas grabbed seven rebounds in an 67-59 loss to the College of Charleston in the CAA semifinals in 2017.

  • Suffered home setbacks to William & Mary (67-65) and Elon (86-66) last week.
  • Brian Fobbs scored a game-high 22 points with six boards vs. W&M.
  • He has eight 20-point outings in the last 13 games and 25 double-digit efforts in the past 27 contests.
  • He's fifth in the CAA in scoring (18.9 ppg) and 13th in rebounds (6.1rpg) in conference play.
  • Tobias Howard added 13 points vs. W&M, including 11 in the 2nd half.
  • He's reached double figures in six of the last 10 games.
  • Nakye Sanders had nine points and eight rebounds vs. Elon and is contributing 11.4 ppg and 8.0 rpg over the past five games.
  • Tunstall had six points and eight rebounds vs. W&M.
  • He's ninth in the CAA with 7.6 rpg.
  • Freshman Solomon Uyaelunmo led Towson with 12 points and eight rebounds against Elon.
  • Towson held W&M to 42.9 percent shooting and has kept seven of its last nine foes under 45%.

A Look At James Madison
  • Fell to Elon (73-58) and William & Mary (70-66) last week.
  • Dwight Wilson posted his seventh double-double vs. W&M with team-highs of 16 points and 15 rebounds.
  • He ranks third in the CAA in field goal percentage and 8th in rebounding.
  • Matt Lewis extended his double-digit scoring streak to 18 games with 15 points vs. W&M.
  • He's averaging 17.4 ppg in CAA play.
  • Stuckey Mosley had 12 points vs. W&M, which was his 13th straight game in double figures, and added nine boards.
  • Mosley third in the CAA with 3.0 treys per game and has hit at least one three in 33 of the last 34 contests.
  • Darius Banks hit 3-of-5 treys and scored a team-high 15 points vs. Elon, but didn't play vs. W&M.
  • Banks is shooting a CAA-best 48.6% from three and is second in steals with 51.
  • Deshon Parker dished out a career-high eight assists vs. Elon, which was the most by a JMU player since 2016.
  • Matthew Urbach hit 3-of-4 treys vs. W&M.
 
The Last Meeting
  • Fobbs poured in 29 points on 11-of-15 shooting to lead the Tigers during a 66-59 victory at SECU Arena on Feb. 9, 2019 to snap a three-game skid to James Madison.
  • Fobbs also finished with five rebounds.
  • Nakye Sanders added nine points and a team best eight rebounds in 26 minutes.
  • McNeil sank a pair of 3-pointers to finish with nine points.
  • McNeil's 3-pointer off of a Fobbs pass gave Towson the lead for good, 51-48 with 7:25 remaining starting a 14-4 Towson burst over a four minute stretch that featured seven points from Fobbs.
  • Howard, Jr. scored eight points.
  • Tunstall overcame foul trouble to grab seven rebounds in 18 minutes against the Dukes.
  • James Madison's Stuckey Mosley scored all 14 of his points in the opening half.
  • Lewis (13 points) and Banks (11 points) also reached double figures for the Dukes.
 
Don't Call It A Comeback
  • Towson has rallied from a deficit of 17 or more points to win a game in each of the last three seasons under head coach Pat Skerry.

  • The other schools who didn't play a home game included Norfolk State (MEAC), Savannah State (MEAC), Prairie View A&M (SWAC), Idaho State (Big Sky), Montana State (Big Sky) and Oakland (Horizon).
 
Under 30 Percent Shooting
  • Towson limited La Salle to 29.8 percent in its 57-51 loss on Dec. 22.
  • Towson is 11-2 when holding teams below 30 percent shooting (7-2 against Division I opponents) under head coach Pat Skerry.
  • The loss to La Salle was the first since a 46-40 setback to Georgetown on Dec. 12, 2012 in which Towson held an opponent below 30 percent shooting and lost.
  • That ended a 10-game winning streak (7 against Division I opponents) when holding an opponent below 30 percent shooting. .
