TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team (5-26) rode a five-inning, scoreless start from
Connor Coyle and plated the first eight runs in a strong 8-3 mid-week victory over George Mason (13-19) on Wednesday afternoon.
Towson scored multiple runs in each in the second, third and fifth innings to build its advantage off Coyle's start.
Key Stats:
- Connor Coyle (1-0) earned a victory in his first-ever start with Towson, going five scoreless frames with four hits and a pair of strikeouts. Joe Enea finished the game with 1.1 innings without a run and a strikeout.
- Towson's eight RBI came from the 7-8-9 of the batting order. Isaiah Winikur had two doubles and a walk in a 2-for-3 day, driving in four runs and scoring twice. Jack Rotteveel went 2-for-4 with two RBI while Trent Gast-Woodard was 1-for-3, bringing in two runs.
- For George Mason, Bailey Klein got a two-run home run in a 1-for-4 afternoon. The loss went to starter Nate Young (1-2), who had six runs surrendered in 2.2 innings.
How it Happened:
- With Connor Coyle going through George Mason 1-2-3 in the first two innings, Towson started the bottom of the second with a pair of walks. With one out, Isaiah Winikur grounded a ball to the right of third base for a double to the corner, scoring Brad Powers and Noah Cabrera. Following a Jack Rotteveel single, Trent Gast-Woodard grounded out to bring home Winikur, building a 3-0 Towson lead.
- The hits kept coming in the bottom of the third as Towson loaded the bases with two outs. Rotteveel blasted a single through the left side hole for two runs scored. Next batter, Gast-Woodard arced a single to left to bring in Winikur, making it 6-0 Tigers.
- With Coyle going five-scoreless on the top half, Towson added more runs as Winikur sent a ball over the left fielder's head to bring in two more runs for an 8-0 Towson advantage.
- David Tiskevics pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh to hold the lead. George Mason struck in the top of the eighth with an RBI single, then a two-run home run by Bailey Klein. Joe Enea entered during the eighth and held off George Mason the rest of the way for the 8-3 Towson victory.
