Baseball Wins First CAA Road Game at Hofstra

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team (6-26, 2-5 CAA) won its 2019 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) road opener at Hofstra (6-23, 1-6 CAA) 8-5 off its fourth consecutive eight-run game.

Riding a strong, eight-inning start from Josh Seils (2-5), Towson used a three-run fifth and a four-run ninth to build a seven-run advantage.  The Tigers held off a late Hofstra rally to earn its second straight victory.

Key Stats:
  • Josh Seils earned his second victory of the season, going 8+ innings with three runs, only two earned, and eight strikeouts.  Jake Pecilunas finished the game with two-thirds of an inning without a run.
  • On the hitting side, Javon Fields had his 11th multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI and three runs scored.  Trey Martinez scored twice and brought in one in a 2-for-4 afternoon while Dirk Masters drove in three runs, hitting 1-for-3 with a stolen base.
  • Anthony D'Onofrio hit a three-run home run for Hofstra, finishing 1-for-2.  The loss went to Jack Jett (0-2), who allowed four runs, three earned, in his start of five innings with five strikeouts.
How it Happened:
  • Towson's early aggression paid off in the top of the first as Javon Fields and Dirk Masters got to scoring position.  With one out, Nick Brown hit a deep ball to right, scoring Fields on the sacrifice fly for the 1-0 Towson lead.
  • The home team tied the game in the following half-inning: with first and third and two outs, a throwing error from third allowed a run to score to make it 1-1.
  • Josh Seils recovered from the first inning and went through the following three frames 1-2-3.  In the fifth, Towson put four consecutive batters on base, including an RBI double off the tall center field wall to score Trey Martinez, then followed with a Masters single lined up the middle to plate Richard Miller and Fields, building a 4-1 lead for Towson.
  • Seils continued his dominance with a fourth straight 1-2-3 inning in the fifth and another three-batter inning in the sixth.  Hofstra got a runner to third in the seventh, with Seils inducing a fly out to end the frame without a run, also stranding a runner in the eighth on second.
  • Towson rallied in the ninth to construct a massive advantage.  Tom Flacco reached on an error and stole second.  Martinez lined a single through the left side to score Flacco.  Miller walked, then Towson had three consecutive RBI plays: a Fields infield single to third, a Masters safety squeeze and a Zach Piazza sacrifice fly.  The Tigers led 8-1.
  • Hofstra put together a late rally in the bottom of the ninth, scoring four runs, capped by a three-run homerun by Anthony D'Onofrio.  Jake Pecilunas entered with one out and induced a pair of ground outs to finish the game in favor of Towson 8-5.
Inside the Numbers:

  • Josh Seils retired 13 consecutive batters from the end of the first through the end of the fifth.
  • Seils' eight strikeouts are a career-high for him, surpassing his six strikeouts thrown vs. Fordham on March 15th.
  • As a team, Towson has scored eight runs in each of the last four games.  Eight runs is the most Towson has scored in a single game this season.
  • New York-native Noah Cabrera has reached base in six consecutive games while Javon Fields has gotten on base in five straight.
