HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – The Towson University baseball team (7-26, 3-5 CAA) won its third-straight game and secured its first Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) series victory by defeating Hofstra (6-24, 1-7 CAA) 5-2 on Saturday afternoon on Long Island.
Towson scored three in the fourth inning plus added a two-run home run by
Trey Martinez, riding a seven-inning, one-run start by
Gavin Weyman (2-5) for the victory.
Key Stats:
- Gavin Weyman won his second-consecutive start, throwing seven innings with one run and three strikeouts. David Tiskevics finished the game, throwing the final two frames with a run and striking out the final batter.
- On the hitting side, Trey Martinez hit his first home run of the season in a 1-for-4 day. Trent Gast-Woodard batted 2-for-4, scoring twice, while Javon Fields concluded 1-for-4 with a double, a run, two RBI and a stolen base.
- For Hofstra, leadoff batter Austin Pollack was 3-for-4, driving in a run. Ryan Rue (1-4) got the loss in his start, allowing five runs in seven innings.
How it Happened:
- In the bottom of the first, Towson pulled off a great defensive play to prevent a potential run: on a ground out to the catcher, the Hofstra lead runner rounded second and headed for third. Nick Brown fired across the diamond to Zach Piazza for the out, completing the double play. The game stayed tied 0-0 after one.
- Defense continued in the bottom of the second. A shallow fly ball to center was batted in the air by Javon Fields on a dive. He hit it again with his bare hand, then again, then gloved it before it hit the ground. During the next plate appearance, Trey Martinez threw out a runner at second attempting to steal, remained 0-0.
- Towson rallied in the top of the third as the Tigers got second and third with one away. Fields flew a double down the right field line to score Trent Gast-Woodard and Tom Flacco. Fields later stole third, then scored on a balk for a 3-0 Towson advantage.
- Gavin Weyman kept the Hofstra batters down, going scoreless in the first four innings. In the fifth, Sean Rausch walked, stole second and scored on a single by Austin Pollack to put Hofstra on the board.
- More stellar defense came in the bottom of the sixth as Isaiah Winikur made a tremendous catch in deep left, slamming into the wall on a full sprint and keeping control. Towson led 3-1 after six innings.
- Towson opened the game up in the top of the seventh. With Gast-Woodard on and two out, Martinez crushed a ball over the left-center fence for a two-run home run, giving the Tigers a 5-1 lead.
- After David Tiskevics pitched a scoreless eighth, Hofstra scored a run in the ninth, but Tiskevics struck out the final batter to ensure the 5-2 victory for Towson.
