NEWARK, Del. – Wednesday afternoon the Towson University tennis team fell in a close match at Delaware, a 4-3 final.
The Tigers move to 11-12 on the year and 3-2 in conference action. Towson has three games remaining this week before heading to the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championship next week.
How it Happened
- In doubles the team of Alexa Martinez and Yegveniya Shusterman took a 6-1 win. The Blue Hens won the following two doubles matches and secured the first point of the day.
- Starting singles, Martinez scored the first win with 6-4 and 6-3 victories, tying the game 1-1. Her match was the only with two sets, the remaining five matches went to three sets.
- At the No. 6 slot, Delaware took a win after Lucy Gloninger started with a 6-3 win in the first set. Phoebe Collins did not let the home team's lead last long, taking a three-set win in the No. 5 spot tying the match once again.
- Collins came back to win the second and third set 7-5 and 6-3 after falling 6-1 in the first. Tied 2-2 the Tigers regained the lead in the next match as Themis Haliou defeated her opponent.
- The No. 2 match finished next, with Shusterman taking a 6-4 win in her first set. Blue Hens' Caragh Courtney won the next two, 7-6 and 6-2 to tie the game for the third time at 3-3.
- Amelia Lawson and her Delaware opponent went to three sets in the finale of the day. Lawson won the first set but fell in the final two as the home team took the win.

"A very tough way to lose, we lost 4-3 after having six match points in two separate singles matches," said head coach
Jamie Peterson. "We put ourselves in a great position to win over a very good Delaware team, tough way to lose."
Towson returns to action on Saturday at home with a Senior Day match against Saint Joseph's. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
