TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team (8-28) fell in a Wednesday afternoon home contest to Coppin State (20-14) 5-2 at Schuerholz Park.
The game was a pitching duel in the first three innings, with Coppin State hitting a pair of home runs to take the lead. Towson scored twice in the bottom of the seventh in a comeback attempt, but came up short.
Key Stats:
- Five Towson players hit safely in the game, including Nick Brown going 1-for-4 with an RBI single. Javon Fields hit 1-for-3 with a double while Noah Cabrera was 1-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
- In his start, Connor Coyle went three scoreless with two strikeouts. The loss went to reliever Austin Weber (1-1) with two innings and three runs. Kody Reeser and Joe Enea each had a scoreless inning of relief.
- For Coppin State, Nazier McIlwain and Matt Day each had home runs. Starter Carter Harbut (1-2) won the game, throwing seven innings with two runs and eight strikeouts.
How it Happened:
- The game started as a pitching duel as Connor Coyle and Carter Harbut kept both teams without a hit in the first three innings.
- Coppin State broke the stalemate in the top of the fourth with a three-run home run by Nazier McIlwain. Later in the sixth, another home run, a solo shot by Matt Day, made it 4-0 Eagles.
- Towson got its bats going in the bottom of the seventh, getting first and second with two outs. Nick Brown shot a ground ball into left field to bring around Noah Cabrera. Next batter, Trent Gast-Woodard singled to left. A throw from left field went over the catcher's head, allowing Zach Piazza to advance and score, making it 4-2 Coppin State.
- After Coppin State scored again in the ninth to go up three, Towson tried a last gasp in the bottom of the ninth, getting the tying run on deck with Isaiah Winikur slapping a single to right, but the Tigers did not get closer and fell 5-2.

- Towson currently has three players that have reached base in at least their last nine games: Brad Powers has gotten on his last 11 games, Noah Cabrera in his last 10 and Javon Fields has gotten on in the last nine games.
