Sulmonte Leads Women's Lacrosse to Victory Over Blue Hens

NEWARK, Del. – Saturday afternoon the 2019 regular season concluded for the Towson in a game at Delaware resulting in a 17-14 win. The Tigers will be off until the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship next weekend at James Madison.
 
The Tigers were led by Natalie Sulmonte with four goals and Nicole Liucci with three. Next up Towson will face Hofstra on Friday at 7 p.m. in the semifinal of the CAA Championship.
 
How it Happened
  • The home team scored twice to start the game before Natalie Sulmonte opened a three-goal run for Towson.
  • Rayna Deltuva scored next for the Tigers before Kerri Liucci put one in the net from Olivia Conti, putting the road team up 3-2 with 21:27 left in the first half.
  • Delaware scored the next two goals, regaining the lead with a 4-3 advantage and 18:56 left in the period.
  • Sulmonte tied it up 23 seconds later assisted by Kerri Liucci. Neither team would see the back of the net for the next three minutes with another back and forth scoring minute as the Blue Hens scored twice and the Tigers scored once.
  • With 14:21 to go in the half, Delaware led 6-5.
  • Towson scored the next four straight goals, taking a 9-6 lead with 5:07 remaining in the half, before the Blue Hens did the same thing.
  • Delaware scored its 10th goal of the day with 21 seconds on the clock and took a one-goal lead into the locker room, 10-9.
  • Coming out of the halftime, the Tigers went on a 6-0 run taking a 15-10 lead with 13:02 to go. The offensive spur was led by freshman Nicole Liucci who scored the second and third goals of the period, putting Towson up 12-10 four minutes in.
  • Madison Hobbes' second goal of the day extended the lead to three before Nicole Liucci scored her third of the day.
  • Coeli Love's goal with 13:02 on the clock put the Tigers in excellent position to continue rolling with a five-goal lead.
  • Three minutes passed before the Blue Hens found an opportunity to score and did so again at the 9:48 mark, cutting the lead to three.
  • Another few minutes went by and the home team struck again, cutting the lead to 15-13.
  • With 4:55 left Natalie Sulmonte scored on a free position shot and extended the lead 16-13.
  • Delaware scored once mores with 2:43 on the clock, making it a two-goal game once again.
  • Towson's Shelby Stack tallied the last goal of the day with 1:32 to go, assisted by Abbe Mona and putting the Tigers up by three.
  • The Blue Hens got one shot off before the final horn sounded but were unable to tie the game again.
Beyond the Box
  • Nicole Liucci recorded her first career hat trick with three goals. It is the rookie's career-high scoring mark.
  • Natalie Sulmonte grabbed a season-high 11 draw controls, the last time she had at least 11 was last season against Georgetown when she finished with 14.
  • This is the second game in 2019 that both Kerri and Nicole Liucci have scored a goal, the last time was against William & Mary.
  • With 65 draw controls on the season, Sulmonte is nine away from tying her mark of 74 in 2018. The 65 puts her 19th in the single-season draw controls record book for the CAA.
