TOWSON, Md. – Friday was good to the Towson University tennis team that took two wins, including a conference victory over UNCW. The Tigers defeated UNCW 4-3 before taking down Delaware State 5-1.
This was the first program win over UNCW. Towson improves to 8-11 on the year and 2-1 in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play. This weekend the Tigers see two more opponents, with Drexel and UMES on Sunday.
How it Happened
- In the UNCW match, the team of Phoebe Collins and Themis Haliou took a doubles win 6-1, but the Seahawks earned the point.
- UNCW's Maddy Hughes took the first win of singles play, as the road team took a 2-0 lead. Yevgeniya Shusterman defeated her opponent to earn the first Towson point of the day.
- Amelia Lawson took the next victory, tying the match 2-2 before the Seahawks took the lead back, 3-2 after a three-set game for Haliou.
- Collins sealed the next win, followed by a 6-3 and 6-2 victory for Lucy Gloninger to take the win.
- Against the Hornets of Delaware State, Towson only played singles and no doubles action.
- Shusterman secured the first singles win with a 6-2, 6-2 final. Collins also went on to win in singles.
- Claire Bedi defeated her opponent 6-2 and 7-5 in her first match of the day. Jessica Assenmacher also took a win, a three-set victory after winning the first set 6-4 she fell in the second and came back for the win in the third.
- Lauryn Jacobs took her first win of the season, a 6-3 and 7-6 win to push the Tigers to victory.
- Delaware State's lone win came from Sofia Rachi over Alexa Martinez.
