TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team (4-25, 1-5 CAA) attempted a late rally on Sunday afternoon but fell to Elon (18-14, 7-2 CAA) 16-8 at Schuerholz Park.
Towson scored three runs in each the seventh and ninth innings to attempt to come back, but could not make up the deficit.
Key Stats:
- Brad Powers hit 2-for-3 with a double, three RBI, a walk and a run scored. Zach Piazza scored three times in a 1-for-3 day with a walk and an RBI.
- The loss went to Towson starter Oluwasayo Kintunde (0-3), who had five runs and a strikeout in 1.1 innings. John Cranston and Connor Coyle had scoreless outings in relief.
- Elon hit five home runs by different players, including Tyler Stanley going 3-for-7 with five RBI, two runs and a stolen base. Jared Wetherbee (3-3) got the win in his start, throwing six innings with two runs, four walks and 12 strikeouts.
How it Happened:
- Elon got the early lead in the top of the second, taking advantage of three free passes with a Tyler Stanley grand slam to left to put the Phoenix ahead 5-0. Later, an Elon home run in the fourth made it 6-0 Phoenix.
- Towson broke the glass in the bottom of the fourth, starting with Zach Piazza and Brad Powers having one-out singles. Two batters later, Jack Rotteveel hit a slow roller to third for a single, with the ensuing throw going wide of first, allowing Piazza to score. Towson trailed 6-1.
- Next half-inning, Elon added four more runs, including a third home run to bring in two, and another two runs in the next frame, to push the visitors' lead to 12-1.
- The Tigers got a run back in the sixth inning as Powers got a one-out single, Noah Cabrera singled on a rope to center, which was bobbled by the centerfielder. Powers came all the way around to score to cut the deficit to 12-2.
- The seventh inning saw each team score, with Trey Martinez doubling to left and eventually scoring on a ground out for Towson. Later with two outs, Powers brought in two with a double over the centerfielder's head, cutting the deficit to eight.
- Elon added a three-run home run in the ninth. Towson looked to rally in the final inning, starting with a couple of walks. Piazza and Powers got sacrifice flies as Towson plated three runners, but the rally was short as Elon won 16-8.

- Brad Powers has reached base in nine consecutive games, hitting .462 in the series vs. Elon.
