Sulmonte Scores Three as Towson Falls at No. 10 JMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Sunday afternoon the Towson University women's lacrosse team opened conference play at No. 10 James Madison, ending in an 11-7 loss on the road.
 
The Tigers were led by Natalie Sulmonte with three goals while four Tigers recorded assists. Next up Towson hosts Elon on Friday, April 12 at 7 p.m. at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium.
 
How it Happened
  • The home team opened the scoring, taking a 3-0 lead six minutes into the game.
  • Freshman Kerri Thornton found space to score after a pass from Natalie Sulmonte, turning left to send the ball past the Dukes' goalie and earn the first Towson point.
  • With 7:06 remaining in the first half, James Madison led 3-1.
  • The Dukes scored twice more in the final 2:28, including a goal with five seconds remaining, taking a 5-1 lead into the locker room.
  • Sulmonte scored the first goal of the second half, on a free position attempt, cutting the lead to 5-2 with 24:20 left to play.
  • James Madison responded less than a minute later, extending the lead 6-2. Two scoring plays in 60 seconds gave the Dukes an 8-2 lead with 15:58 to go.
  • Sophomore Gabbie Biondi scored her first goal of the year with 15:09 to go, assisted by Kaitlin Thornton, cutting the lead once again 8-3.
  • One minute later it was another Towson goal, from Kailtin Thornton this time, cutting the deficit to four goals.
  • With 13:03 to go the Dukes tallied another goal taking a 9-4 lead, forcing a Tiger timeout.
  • Kaitlin Thornton scored her second of the day with 10:37 to go, making it a four-goal game.
  • Both teams were held scoreless for the next three minutes, before James Madison scored its 10th goal of the day.
  • JMU took an 11-5 lead with 6:48 to go, and neither team saw the back of the net until the 2:47 mark when Sulmonte scored her second of the day, assisted by Kerri Thornton.
  • Sulmonte scored the final Towson goal with 38 seconds to go, completing the hat trick, assisted by Nicole Liucci.
 
Beyond the Box
  • This was Natalie Sulmonte's fourth game with at least three goals scored.
  • Both Kaitlin and Kerri Thornton scored in a game for the fourth time this season. This was Kaitlin's seventh game with at least two goals.
  • Kerri Liucci made her first career start against the Dukes, while Nicole Liucci recorded her first career assist on a Sulmonte goal.
  • The goal scored by Sulmonte at the 2:47 mark was the first woman-down goal of the year for the Tigers.
  • Towson forced 12 turnovers, with an end result of 18 JMU turnovers and nine for the road team. Olivia Conti and Sami Chenoweth paired for seven of the 12 caused turnovers.
