The Mountaineers (1-0) won their second consecutive game over Towson, also the second straight year defeating the Tigers in the opening game.
Sophomore
Kathryn Parkinson and freshman
Georgia Beachley each recorded a shot on goal.
How it Happened
- The road team scored quickly in the first quarter, at the 4:53 mark. Appalachian State's Meghan Smart pulled out in front of Towson's goalkeeper Tess Okkerse and bounced around before finding free space to the left and striking.
- Okkerse went on to save the next three shots including two corner shots and the Mountaineers took a 1-0 lead into the second period.
- Three minutes into the second quarter, App State's Friederike Stegen extended the lead to two with a goal on a corner.
- Towson earned its first corner 20 minutes into the game and set up sophomore Paige Reese who's shot went to the side.
- The Mountaineers responded with another corner, which Smart missed and two minutes later her teammate Pauline Mangold took a shot after regaining possession that went wide.
- Entering the half Appalachian State led 2-0.
- The third period saw a total of three shots, two from the road team and one from Tiger rookie Georgia Beachley. Okkerse grabbed a save and the fourth period began with a 2-0 deficit for the home team.
- Okkerse grabbed two back-to-back saves to start the fourth quarter before the home team saw two chances to cut the lead.
- Kathryn Parkinson took a shot with eight minutes remaining and resulted in setting up for a corner.
- Towson didn't make the back of the net on the first corner attempt but earned another corner. Gretchen Alderfer got an attempt at a shot before App State regained possession.
- Minutes later the Mountaineers got within goal range and missed the first shot attempt after Okkerse knocked the ball down. The ricochet gave Sarah Farrell the ball again and Smart scored her second of the day.
- With just seven seconds left the Tigers set up for a corner but faced a strong defense in the circle that kept the ball away long enough for the final horn.
Behind the Numbers
- Rookie goalkeeper Tess Okkerse finished her collegiate debut with six saves.
- In the fourth period, Towson out-earned Appalachian State in penalty corners 3-1.
- Georgia Beachley's single shot on goal is her first of the year and she was the only freshman to record an offensive statistic today.
