Volleyball Battles Coastal in Five-Set Thriller

TOWSON, Md. -- The first-ever meeting between Towson University women's volleyball team and Coastal Carolina University was an instant thriller Friday night at SECU Arena. The two teams traded blows relentlessly before the visiting Chanticleers won 3-2 (21-25, 25-23, 19-25, 32-30, 15-8).

Towson (6-2) had two double-doubles as Emily Jarome finished with a season-best 20 kills along with 16 digs. Setter Marrisa Wonders hoisted a career-best 57 assists, paired with 10 digs. Olivia Finckel dropped in 19 kills, one shy of her career-best.

Coastal Carolina (8-0) remained unbeaten behind a 26-kill effort from Anett Nemeth. Libero Lina Perugini had a match-best 27 kills.

How it Happened
  • In the first set, the two sides traded blows and long runs, battling back and forth. Towson used a 6-0 burst to take a 22-16 lead before closing the frame on a 3-2 run for a 25-21 decision.
  • Again the second set saw both sides combining longer runs to trade the lead. Coastal used a 5-0 run to take a 15-12 advantage. The Tigers battled back to wrest control 19-18 but the Chanticleers utilized a 5-2 burst for a 25-23 set win.
  • Towson controlled the early portion of set three with a 4-0 run that was eventually tied before notching an 8-0 combo for a 12-4 lead. The sides went back and forth until the Chanticleers went on a 7-1 run to pull within two of Towson, 19-17. The Tigers finished the third set on a 5-1 streak for a 25-19 cap.
  • The longest set of the evening saw the sides battle back and forth late. The Tigers took a 19-12 lead, but Coastal answered back with a 6-0 run. The Chanticleers got to set point, 24-23, but a Finckel kill deadlocked the frame at 24-24. The set was then tied six more times, thanks largely to Coastal service errors with a one-point lead, a play that happened three times in those ties.
  • Coastal pushed the match to a fifth set with back-to-back points from Mariia Levanova for a 32-30 score.
  • Set five was once again a back-and-forth affair as the teams tied at one, four, five and six. A 3-0 run by Coastal pushed Towson to a timeout trailing 9-6. Out of the pause, the Chanticleers managed a 6-2 run to take the match 3-2 with a 15-8 final set score.
