Efficiency Leads Volleyball to Sweep Over UAlbany

TOWSON, Md. -- It was an efficient finish to the 2019 Towson Invitational as the host Towson University women's volleyball team swept the University at Albany 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-19) Saturday afternoon at SECU Arena.

The Tigers (7-2) hit for .354 in the match, including .538 in the opening set. Towson's middle blockers Lydia Wiers and Silvia Grassini were effective as each scored eight kills and had five block assists each en route to All-Tournament Status.

UAlbany (2-7) was led by six kills each from Danielle Tedesco and Akuabata Okenwa. The latter was selected to the All-Tournament team as well.

Joining the Tigers and Great Dane on the All-Tournament Team were Ani Bozdeva and Anett Nemeth from Coastal Carolina, with the former named MVP, and Aleah Hughes from Youngstown State.

How it Happened
  • While the first set began as a back-and-forth battle, the Tigers pulled away early thanks to a 6-0 run that built to a 10-4 lead. Towson continued its lead out to 17-7, not allowing the Great Danes back-to-back points until UAlbany scored its eighth and ninth points of the set.
  • Towson then strung together a 6-1 run to redouble its lead, 23-10. Grassini and Annie Ertz had two kills apiece in the run.
  • After back-to-back Great Dane points, Towson closed the door on the first set as Olivia Finckel dropped in her third service ace of the first set, giving Towson a 25-12 win.
  • Set two began similarly as the sides went back-and-forth, with UAlbany eventually taking a 9-8 lead. The Tigers roared past with a 7-1 run that bridged a UAlbany timeout for a 15-10 lead. Later in the set, Towson ripped off seven-straight, again fighting off a Great Dane timeout, as Towson took advantage of several UAlbany miscues.
  • The Great Danes halted the run, but it was too little too late as the Tigers won the final three points of the set for a second-straight 25-12 finish.
  • The third set was a tighter affair as the visiting Great Danes gained their biggest lead of the day at 11-8 before the Tigers slowly chipped away. Towson strung together mini runs and went up 18-15 before UAlbany scored back-to-back points again and made it a one-point set. The Tigers knocked out six-straight points to reach match point, 24-17. The Great Danes kept fighting with two in a row, but a big swing from Finckel gave Towson its sixth sweep of the season.

Behind the Numbers
  • Ertz led the Tigers with 13 kills, hitting at a .545 percent clip with 22 attempts and just one error. She added four block assists and nine digs.

  • Libero Camryn Allen led Towson's back row with 13 digs while also landing a service ace. Finckel led Towson at the service line with three aces, all landing in the first set. She added seven kills and three assisted blocks to her day.
