Volleyball Continues Revenge Tour to Open Tiger Invitational

BALTIMORE -- For a second time this season, the Towson University women's volleyball exacted sweeping revenge, topping Loyola University Maryland 3-0 Friday night at Reitz Arena behind set scores of 25-18, 25-20, 25-21.

Towson (8-2) dropped its match against the Greyhounds last season in four sets before sweeping the hosts this year. The Tigers dominated the net, coming up with 10 blocks, including six from Lydia Wiers and five from Olivia Finckel. Finckel, Annie Ertz and Emily Jarome led Towson's attack with seven kills apiece while Marrisa Wonders hoisted 27 assists in three sets.

Loyola (6-6) was led by 10 kills from Abby Hamilton and nine from Ann Ernst, but the Greyhounds were limited to a .041 hitting percentage in the match, including a -.095 in the second set.

How it Happened
  • The first set was tight early, featuring five ties. After the frame was tied 5-5, Towson put together a 4-1 burst for a 9-6 lead. Towson's defense held Loyola without back-to-back points until the Greyhounds scored their 14th and 15th of the set, but the Tigers held a 20-15 lead.
  • Towson clinched the first set 25-18 thanks to three-straight points, including an ace from Annie Ertz.
  • If the first set was tight early, the second set was even more so as there were four lead changes and eight ties. Towson went up 7-4 before Loyola returned the favor and tied the set 10-10. The Greyhounds snagged a 14-13 lead but Towson's offense came to life and reeled off four unanswered points with kills from Ertz and Jarome, along with Loyola attack errors.
  • Loyola rallied and tied the set at 17 apiece, but several clustered points for the Tigers made the difference late as Towson won 25-20.
  • A common theme for the night, set three was another back-and-forth effort for both sides as there were 10 ties and six lead changes.
  • Towson went up 6-3 thanks to blocks and a kill from Wiers. Loyola answered with a 6-1 run to wrest a 9-7 lead.
  • The teams traded shots through the middle of the third set before a 5-1 Tiger burst for an 18-15 lead and forcing a Loyola timeout. Out of the pause, the Greyhounds pulled back within one but Towson countered with a 4-2 finishing flourish to take set three 25-21 and the match 3-0.
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson's offense was a balanced attack with three players, Ertz, Finckel and Jarome, knocking down seven kills apiece. Towson hit for .198 in the match with 15 errors on 106 swings.
  • Towson's miscues were mostly self-inflicted as the Greyhounds had five total blocks.
  • The Tigers' defense was stout, holding Loyola to single-figure or lower hitting percentages in sets two and three. Towson had 10 total blocks, backed by Wiers' six and Finckel's five.
  • Wonders led the Tigers with 27 assists while Ally Townsend logged a pair. Wonders' played heads-up volleyball knocking down three kills and getting up for two assisted blocks.
  • Libero Camryn Allen had a team-best 12 digs, one more than Ertz. Loyola's libero, Katie Forsythe, had 14 digs.
  • The Tigers now have a 45-15 overall record against Loyola and have won 17 of the last 18 meetings. Towson's last four wins over the Greyhounds have been by a 3-0 count.
