Volleyball’s Block Party Leads to Sweep of Blue Hens

NEWARK, Del. -- It was another clean sweep for the Towson University women's volleyball team as the Tigers opened Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) action Friday night against rival Delaware with a straight-set win (25-20, 25-19, 25-21).

Towson (11-2, 1-0 CAA) won its fifth-straight match by a 3-0 count and has now won its last four matches over the Blue Hens in sweeping fashion. The Tigers had a block party, finishing with 11.5 team blocks, including five assisted stops each from Lydia Wiers and Olivia Finckel. Marrisa Wonders turned in her fifth double-double of the year with 37 assists and 10 digs.

Delaware (8-4, 0-1 CAA) was paced by a match-high 16 kills from Maria Bellinger. Libero Andie Hanus had 16 digs while Ezgi Basaranlar notched 32 assists. The Blue Hens were limited to a .134 hitting percentage through the match.

How it Happened
  • The first set was back-and-forth early as the teams began their 81st meeting. After four ties in the first 10 serves, Delaware grabbed a 10-7 lead.
  • But that lead was short lived as the Tigers stormed back and wrested a 14-11 lead behind a 5-0 surge. Jarome and Camryn Allen dropped down aces in the run.
  • Towson continued to run ahead and grabbed a 20-15 lead on a 4-1 burst. Delaware called a timeout that halted the run before the hosts reeled off a 5-1 run of their own, trimming Towson's lead to 21-20.
  • The Tigers slammed the door on the first set with a 4-0 flourish and a 25-20 run with kills from Finckel and Jarome.
  • The Blue Hens reeled off a 3-0 run to start the second set, but Towson answered back to tie the set at 3-3, 4-4 and eventually 5-5. Towson controlled the frame until a 6-0 Delaware run saw the hosts leading 14-11, forcing a Tiger timeout.
  • Pausing the action worked for the Tigers as Towson answered the bell with a 6-1 run to regain a 17-15 lead. All gas and no brakes, Towson capped the set with a 6-1 run behind kills from Silvia Grassini and Annie Ertz, with the latter roping in an ace for the 25-19 set decision.
  • Set three was all Towson early as the Tigers roared out to a 5- lead before a Delaware timeout. Both sides went back-and-forth before the Blue Hens tied the set at nine. A long Towson run, aided by back-to-back blocks from Wiers, Finckel and Jarome and an Allen ace put Towson up 19-13.
  • Delaware never threatened late in the match as Towson held at least a three-point lead up to its 25-21 match-winning set.
Behind the Numbers
  • The Tigers hit at a .292 percentage for the match, including a .324 in the second set. Towson's middle blockers, Wiers and Grassini, hit for .429 and .438, respectively. Both knocked down eight kills.
  • Towson had a versatile attack with Finckel pacing the night with nine kills. In addition to Wiers and Grassini, Towson got eight kills from Jarome and Ertz.
  • Allen roped in a pair of service aces, extending her ace streak to nine straight matches. She has five aces in the Tigers' last two matches combined.
  • Towson improved to 42-39 all-time against the Blue Hens, including four-straight sweeps. The Tigers have never lost in the Bob Carpenter Center against Delaware, winning eight-straight matches in Newark.
  • Towson is 19-12 all-time in Newark against Delaware while winning its fifth-straight match against the Blue Hens.
