Volleyball Responds in Second Match for Win Over Virginia

BOX SCORE NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. -- Bouncing back from a loss earlier in the day, the Towson University women's volleyball team slid past the University of Virginia 3-1 (25-11, 25-15, 15-25, 25-20) Friday afternoon at College Ave. Gym in the final match of day one during the Rutgers Invitational.

Towson (4-1) roared back by hitting nearly .300 for the match while coming up with 14 team blocks and seven service aces. Olivia Finckel (13), Annie Ertz (13) and Emily Jarome (10) all finished with double-digit kills while Marrisa Wonders hoisted 41 assists.

Virginia (3-2) had one player in double figures as Jelena Novakovic put down 14 of her 25 attempts. Megan Wilson and Maddie Boylston split setting duties and logged 23 and 13, respectively.

How it Happened
  • The early portion of the opening frame was back and forth, with neither team gaining more than a two-point advantage until a quick three-point burst from the Tigers gave Towson a 10-6 advantage, aided by a Jarome kill and a Finckel ace.
  • Towson continued to dominate the first set, running off 11 unanswered points to take the first set 25-11, capped by Jarome and Lydia Wiers on the block.
  • Set two began similarly as the two sides traded blows for four ties in the first 30 serves. The Tigers used several runs to break open the second set, including a nine-point run to cap the frame for a 25-15 decision.
  • Virginia came out firing in the third set, jumping out to a 10-2 lead before a Tiger timeout. Towson had a difficult time stringing points together in the third set, scoring back-to-back points just twice in the frame before falling 25-15.
  • In what proved to be the deciding set, Towson took a 10-7 lead on a Camryn Allen service ace that pushed Virginia to a timeout. Virginia responded out of the break and pulled back within one, 13-12 Towson, before the teams continued to trade shots over the next several points.
  • Needing to finish the job, Towson capped the frame on a 6-1 scoring run that included two service aces from rookie defensive specialist Asia Goins for a 25-20 set win and the match.

Behind the Numbers
  • Towson hit for .298 in the match, including a .500 hitting percentage in the first and a .400 in the fourth.
  • Six different Tigers secured service aces, including the pair from Goins. Virginia managed just two aces the entire match.
  • Once again, Towson was strong on the block, finishing with 14 and the Tigers got through on the attack as Virginia had just eight blocks. Wiers had four total blocks while Jarome chipped in three.
  • Ertz contributed her first double-double of the year, posting 13 kills and 10 digs. Allen notched a team-best 13 digs. Ertz led Towson on the attack with a .417 hitting percentage with 13 kills on 24 swings with just three miscues.
  • Towson has now topped an ACC opponent for a third-straight year, combining with sweeps of Virginia in 2017 and Miami in 2018.
  • Towson dropped a set to the Cavaliers for the first time since falling 3-1 on Sept. 14, 2004.

Up Next for Towson
  • The Tigers of Towson conclude the Rutgers Invitational Saturday morning at College Ave. Gym.
  • First serve for Towson is set for 11 a.m. as the Black & Gold Tigers rematch with the Black & Orange Tigers of Princeton University.
  • Princeton fell 3-1 in both its matches on Friday.
