PHILADELPHIA – Friday night the Towson University women's basketball team faced Drexel on the road in a rematch of the 2019 CAA Championship game. The Tigers fell in a close one, 59-50.
Three Tigers finished in double figures with 13 points from
Nukiya Mayo,
Q. Murray and
Kionna Jeter. Mayo finished another double-double with 11 rebounds.
Towson moves to 10-9 on the season and 5-3 in conference play.
How it Happened
- The Tigers started strong rolling to a 7-0 lead in the first three minutes and forcing a Dragons' timeout.
- On the other side of the timeout, the home team responded with force, taking a 12-11 lead. In the first quarter, Drexel and Towson had the same field goal percentage but the Dragons went 6-of-10 from three, leading 23-15 at the end.
- Opening the second quarter Drexel continued to extend the score, leading 35-19 by the media timeout with 4:16 to go in the half.
- Entering the third the Tigers saw a strong showing and scored three straight buckets, cutting the lead to eight and forcing a Drexel timeout.
- Eight points was as close as Towson would get to closing the gap in the third, as the Dragons returned to a double-digit lead of 10 by the end, up 49-39.
- A very slow start in the fourth quarter as only three buckets were made in the first four minutes. With 8:34 to go Towson cut the lead to 51-43 on a jumper by Ryan Holder.
- By the media timeout with 6:22 to go, the score was still the same.
- At the 4:45 mark Kionna Jeter made two free throws and the Tigers cut the lead all the way to three points a minute later.
- With 1:22 to go Towson trailed by four, the closest the Tigers would get to tying it up.
Beyond the Box
- Nukiya Mayo recorded her eighth double-double of the season at Drexel.
- Kionna Jeter has now scored 10 or more points in 21 consecutive outings, dating back to March 16, 2019.
- Q. Murray's 13 points were her 10th game this season in double-figure scoring.
