Postgame Quote:
Towson head coach
Pat Skerry: "Credit to San Francisco, they had a big jump start to the second half. I thought we did a pretty good job early, but we've got to be better at contesting shots."
How it Happened:
- The game started as a defensive battle, with Victor Uyaelunmo pushing through the paint for the first layup. Towson continued to attack the basket, with back-to-back layups from Zane Martin and Nicolas Timberlake making it 9-5 Towson with 15:40 left in the 1st.
- After a Martin three, USF connected on a couple of deep threes. Martin pulled a defender on the pick and roll to free up Charles Thompson for a thunderous dunk. That started a 7-0 Tiger run over a period of over four minutes, capped by a long three from Jason Gibson, to push Towson up 19-13.
- San Francisco kept firing up attempts from three-point range and bridged the gap, going ahead with a Dzmitry three with 3:16 left in the half. Victor Uyaelunmo kept getting to the line and hit free throws to keep Towson close, but a Jamaree Bouyea deep three at the buzzer gave USF a 34-30 advantage at the break.
- The pace was much faster at the start of the second, with Martin and Juwan Gray attacking the basket and scoring layups. But, USF also went to the paint the other way, leading to an 8-0 run and a 45-34 advantage 3:15 into the second.
- After USF went up by 17, Martin tried to spur on a comeback, driving to the basket and hitting a layup and one. Thompson followed with a second chance basket to pull within 12, down 53-41.
- Towson tried to chip away as Cam Allen hit a tough 15-foot shot and Gibson hit a layup in traffic. The defense picked up for both sides as Towson looked to the charity stripe for points, getting back to within 11 after free throws from Uyaelunmo and Timberlake.
- With less than four minutes left, Martin hit a couple of tough layups, to get Towson within seven. But two Josh Kunen threes kept USF ahead the rest of the way as the Dons won 79-68.
