Tigers Earn Mention Among PressBox’s Best of 2020

BALTIMORE -- As the tumultuous year of 2020 comes to a close in a fortnight, several former and current Towson University student-athletes earned mention among PressBox Magazine's Best of 2020 selection, which was released Wednesday morning.

One current student-athlete, Asia Goins (women's volleyball), was among the honorees while former Tigers Tyler Konen (men's lacrosse) and Michael Locksley (football) were also selected.

In the four annual Best of edition, which is presented by Maryland's Sports Commission, Baltimore Oriole was selected as the Mo Gaba Sportsperson of the Year by the Baltimore-based publication.

Amid nationwide protests stemming from the death of George Floyd, the Towson volleyball team held productive conversations that led to the formation of Towson University Athletes for Inclusion, Diversity and Equity in July. TUAIDE aims to create positive social change at Towson and in other communities.

The leading student-athlete voice in the effort is volleyball sophomore Asia Goins, who is also part of the Colonial Athletic Association's United For Change Executive Committee.

Goins said in November that her experience as the co-chair of TUAIDE alongside Davon Robb, the school's athletic director for facilities and event management, "has been just so eye-opening. I'm more than just my sport. There are more things out there that seem like such bigger [problems] than just a match or a game. As an athlete, you're forced to think about your next game coming up, what you need to work on and what you need to do. But there's just so many more things out there that student-athletes can get engaged on right now and use our voice, especially on social media platforms, and be a part of something bigger."

Tyler Konen Best of 2020Tyler Konen (Men's Lacrosse)
Former Towson men's lacrosse attackman Tyler Konen had 21 goals and 29 assists with the Tigers from 2014-2017, but he's moved on to other pursuits.

He's studying at the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg, W.V., and doing his clinical rotations at Frederick Health Hospital in Maryland, where he's plying his trade amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

How did his lacrosse career help him in the fight against COVID-19?

"What it comes down to is … any sport and medicine kind of relate [because of] the reps," Konen said in May. "You practice, and when the time comes you don't even have to think. You're just doing it. You just know how to handle the situation. So I think being a Towson lacrosse player actually really prepared me for my future in the medical field."

In August, Maryland head football coach Michael Locksley launched the National Coalition of Minority Football Coaches, a nonprofit organization that aims to help qualified minority coaches rise through the ranks in college and professional football.

Locksley is on the NCMFC's board of directors along with former Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome, Alabama head coach Nick Saban and Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.

"I wanted to create an organization that would be able to help prepare, promote and produce the next group of coaches coming up through the ranks at every level," Locksley said in a news release.
