Tigers Win Third-Straight With 33 From Jeter

TOWSON, Md.  – Kionna Jeter led the way with a career-high 33 points as the Towson University women's basketball team won its third-straight game on Sunday, defeating Morgan State 95-59.
 
Jeter paced the Tigers with her second 30-point game this season while Aleah Nelson dropped 14 points and 10 assists for a double-double and Shavonne Smith contributed 10. Towson improves to a 5-1 start on the season and will host Saint Francis (Pa.) on Tuesday afternoon.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Kionna Jeter scored the opening bucket, and the home team started with a 6-0 lead with 7:58 to go. Morgan State responded in the next five seconds and the battle ensued.
  • With missed shots, turnovers and stoppages the beginning minutes were quiet, but the Tigers started to hit a streak, taking a 15-7 lead with 3:58 remaining.
  • Aleah Nelson scored the 17th point for Towson, extending the lead to 10, while the defense held on to keep the Bears at a low shooting percentage.
  • Morgan State shot 4-of-14 in the first quarter as the Tigers went on to lead 24-9 with 1:07 on the clock. The Bears' Dahyne Redd completed an and-one play to close out the period, finally getting the road team over the 10-point mark.
  • Skye Williams came off the bench and scored the first points of the second quarter as Towson started laying on the gas.
  • The Black and Gold led by as much as 30 points in the second, winning the quarter 26-11 and entering the locker room leading 50-23. At halftime, Jeter was leading the Tigers with 21 points shooting 9-of-11 from the field.
  • Morgan State tried to chip away at the lead in the third quarter, coming within 20 points of closing the gap with 5:31 to go. A jumper by Nelson on the next scoring play put the Tigers up by 22, leading 61-39, and Towson continued to score and hold at least a 22-point lead through the remainder of the quarter.
  • Entering the fourth, Jeter drained a three putting the home team over the 70-point mark. The Bears responded with a three on the other end of the court and Towson followed up with an 8-1 run over a stretch of the next two minutes.
  • With 6:42 to go, Shavonne Smith made two free throws and put the Tigers up by 33 points, sealing the victory.
BEYOND THE BOX
  • Kionna Jeter's career-best 33 points have moved her to 1,251 total points in 68 games, taking eighth in program history for all-time scoring. This is her second game this season with at least 32 points.
  • Jeter has scored 10 or more points in 14-straight games dating back to Feb. 14 against UNCW at home.
  • Aleah Nelson's double-double is her second of the season and career. Nelson's 11 assists are a career-best, her previous was 10 set earlier this season against La Salle.
  • Nelson has scored 10 or more points this season in each of Towson's six games, her 14 points today are the third-best of the season.
  • Shavonne Smith is quickly becoming a force in the starting core of the Tigers' offense with her sixth-straight game in double figures as well.
  • Towson's 56.7 shooting percentage is the best of the season and the Tigers' third game this year posting at least a 50 percent field goal percentage.
  • Entering the game, Towson was third in the nation in scoring with 96.6 points per game. After today's win the Black and Gold are averaging 96.3 points per game, still leading the Colonial Athletic Association in scoring. 
LOOKING AHEAD
The non-conference schedule for Towson will conclude on Tuesday as the Tigers host Saint Francis (Pa.) at 2 p.m. in SECU Arena. Towson will then be off through the holidays before opening CAA play at James Madison on Jan. 3.
