Men’s Lacrosse Nipped in Home Opener

TOWSON, Md. -- Despite a shutout in the fourth quarter, the Towson University men's lacrosse team was nipped 11-10 in its 2020 home opener against visiting Mount St. Mary's Saturday afternoon at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium.

The Tigers (0-2) got a hat trick from Jon Mazza, along with two goals apiece from fellow attackmen Brody McLean and Luke Fromert. Towson struggled early at the faceoff X, but rookie Shane Santora responded with a 10-of-17 performance in relief.

Mount St. Mary's (1-1) had a four-goal day from Matt Haggerty, while Kelly Gouin and Brenden McCarthy posted hat tricks. Starting netminder Dylan Furnback stopped 12 shots in his first win of the season.

How It Happened
  • Towson started strong, forcing The Mount into back-to-back shot clock violations to start the game with Mazza posting two goals for a 2-0 Towson lead six minutes in.
  • The Mount responded with a five-goal burst across the remainder of the first period with Gouin scoring twice and three teammates netting one apiece.
  • McLean snapped the skid with his first of the day with 96 seconds to go in the first quarter as Towson trailed 5-3 after 15 minutes.
  • With a potent man-up unit, The Mount redoubled the lead 6-3 on Haggerty's third of the day 24 seconds into the fresh stanza. Towson went on a four-goal burst of its own with markers from McLean, Fromert, Mazza and James Avanzato. For a 7-6 lead at halftime.
  • The sides traded blows early in the second half as Haggerty scored his third 54 seconds in before Austin Stewart got his first Towson goal on a feed from Avanzato to put the Tigers back up 8-7.
  • The game's deciding run came on a four-goal spurt for the Mountaineers as Gouin and Haggerty scored, the latter on an extra-man, bookending a pair from McCarthy, including another man-up goal. Mount St. Mary's asserted an 11-8 lead.
  • Towson made a run in the second half of the final quarter with goals from Fromert and Maloof, but two key saves from Furnback sealed the Tigers' collective fate for an 11-10 decision.
Behind the Numbers
  • The game was tight throughout as both sides too 37 shots. Towson ripped off 16 attempts in a come-from-behind effort in the fourth quarter, but Furnback made five saves in that period.
  • Towson for four total saves, two from starting keeper Tyler Canto and another pair from Jake Stout, making his first career appearance at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium.
  • Mount St. Mary's held a 20-14 edge in ground balls. The visitors won 14 of the game's 24 faceoffs, but Santora held his own with a 10-of-17 effort including one ground ball. Sam Stephan took all 24 draws for The Mount.
  • The Tigers had just 12 miscues in the game, including only one turnover in the final quarter. Nine of those 12 turnovers came in the second and third quarters.
  • Mount St. Mary's capitalized on three extra man chances, scoring on all three.
  • Saturday's game was the first time since 1975 Towson suffered a loss against Mount St. Mary's and the first in program history in regulation. Towson is 14-2 all-time against The Mount, with one of the losses as a forfeit during the 1975 campaign.
