Towson Baseball Defeats GW, Earns Third Win in a Row

ARLINGTON, Va. – The Towson University baseball team earned its third consecutive victory, and fifth win in the last six games, with a 5-2 mid-week road win over George Washington.

Down 1-0 early, Towson (7-8) used four unanswered runs from the second to the fifth innings to take the lead for good over George Washington (8-8).

This is Towson's first victory over George Washington since 2017, plus the Tigers are 2-0 in mid-week games so far this year.

Key Stats:
  • Brandon Austin notched two RBI singles for Towson, hitting 3-for-4 with a double.  Reigning CAA Rookie of the Week Burke Camper went 2-for-4 with a run scored while leadoff man Matt Arceo got on base four times from a 2-for-3 day and two walks.
  • On the mound, Teddy Blumenauer (1-0) had a great first Towson start, throwing 6.1 innings with two runs, striking out five.  The bullpen of Pete Marchineck, Cam Clark and Jake Pecilunas combined to throw the final 2.2 scoreless innings, with Pecilunas earning his second save of the year.
  • For George Washington, Noah Levin hit 2-for-4 with an RBI.  Starter Jeb Callaghan went 2.1 innings with a run with the loss going to Connor Harris (1-2), who had two innings with three runs and three strikeouts.
How It Happened:
  • The home team got the first run on an RBI infield single by Noah Levin to make it 1-0.
  • Towson tied the game up in the following half-inning.  With first and second and one away, Brandon Austin knocked through a single, bringing in Brad Powers and putting the score at 1-1.
  • Austin delivered again in the top of the fourth.  With one out, he hit an RBI single to right, bringing home Burke Camper and giving Towson a 2-1 advantage.
  • The next inning, Towson added insurance.  Singles from Matt Arceo and Javon Fields put runners on first and second with one.  Powers found the gap in left-center for a single, bringing in a run.  While Camper was batting, Fields broke for third and stole the bag, then took home on a throwing error.  Towson led 4-1.
  • GW got a run back in the bottom of the seventh off an Ervin Bogan RBI single to pull within two.  The next inning, GW threatened with first and second and two out; Cam Clark forced a ground out to end the frame.
  • Towson got the run back in the top of the ninth, starting with a single and a fielding error to get runners to the corners.  Fields grounded out but brought home a runner to make it 5-2.  Jake Pecilunas entered in the ninth and got through 1-2-3 to finish the game in favor of Towson 5-2.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Brandon Austin has reached base in his last 12 games.
