Towson Women's Soccer Edged in Physical Battle vs. JMU

TOWSON, Md. – In front of 783 fans at Tiger Field, the Towson University women's soccer team engaged in a back-and-forth struggle against JMU on Thursday night, narrowly falling 2-1 at home.
 
Towson (7-5-2, 2-3 CAA) tied the game in the 73rd minute vs. JMU (5-7-1, 2-2 CAA) off a Demi Pierre goal, but JMU scored quickly thereafter and held the rest of the way for the win.
 
All goals in the game were scored in the final 21 minutes of the contest.
 
Key Stats:
  • In the game, JMU outshot Towson 12-7, with the Tigers having four saves to JMU's one.
  • Demi Pierre notched her second goal of the season in the 73rd minute, assisted on passes by Jasmine Hamid and Jacey Miller.  Pierre was one of seven Tigers who recorded a shot in the game.
  • Riley Melendez (7-5-2) got the defeat in goal with four saves and two goals allowed.
  • For JMU, Ebony Wiseman scored the first goal, from Iris Rabot, in the 70th minute, followed less than four minutes later by Ginger Deel scoring off a crossbar deflection by Amanda Attanasi.  The win in goal went to Alexandra Blom (5-7-1) with a save and goal allowed.
Postgame Quote:
  • Towson head coach Katherine Vettori: "It was an exciting and intense game, thank you to all the fans coming out and supporting us today.  I think the game could have gone either way, but JMU punished us for our mistakes today."
How It Happened:
  • The game immediately got to a physical start, with JMU drawing the first chance on a corner in the eighth minute.  Ashby Larkin sent a shot high and out of play.  The next minute, Iris Rabot's chance was saved by Riley Melendez.
  • Towson tried to get a quick attack off a stolen pass as Phoebe Canoles sent a shot from long range high in the 12th minute.
  • Minute 20 saw Ariana Reyes take a shot on the run, being saved by Melendez.  Towson went on a counterattack as Alexandra Rush took aim, missing high.
  • Action went back and forth in the midfield as each side tried to establish the offense.  JMU had a chance in the final minute of the first but missed well left of cage to keep the score at 0-0 at the break.
  • As both sides looked to regroup, Towson drew its first corner kick in the 57th minute.  JMU cleared out the cross, then Camryn Anderson tried a long range fire, missing high.
  • After holding off a close attempt from JMU in the 61st minute, eight minutes later, JMU got an open look in the box off a couple of passes and scored from straight away, 10 meters out from Ebony Wiseman to lead 1-0.
  • Towson picked up the pace and pushed in its offensive third.  Off a couple of passes from Jacey Miller and Jasmine Hamid, Demi Pierre got off a shot that crossed the end line for the goal in the 73rd minute to tie the game.
  • Quickly after with new players, Ginger Deel took a ball off the crossbar and put it into the net from Amanda Attanasi to send JMU back up 2-1.
  • As Towson looked to equalize, its last chance came on a corner kick in the final minute of play.  The cross was cleared out by JMU as the Dukes took the win 2-1.
Inside the Numbers
  • With a scoreless first half, Towson had 10 consecutive regulation halves without a goal allowed at home dating back to Aug. 29.  JMU's two goals in the second half snapped that streak.
  • This is the first time a Towson opponent has scored more than one goal at Tiger Field in a game this season.
  • Jacey Miller earned her second career assist, with her first coming as a freshman in 2019.
