Volleyball Falters at Home Against Elon

TOWSON, Md. -- The Towson University women's volleyball program dropped a four-set loss to visiting Elon University Saturday afternoon, ending the Tigers' 24-match winning streak at SECU Arena.

Towson (15-2, 3-2 CAA) won the opening set, but Elon responded back in the next three, taking the match 18-25, 25-16, 25-17, 25-23. The Tigers served seven service aces, but unforced errors, including 12 service errors, proved to be insurmountable.

The Tigers had 10 kills from Emily Jarome, who added nine digs as well. Fay Bakodimou and Irbe Lazda added eight kills apiece. Kristin Spengler and Megan Wilson posted 21 and 17 assists, respectively. Bakodimou added four more service aces to her line while Rachel Hess notched 16 digs.

Elon (10-5, 5-0 CAA), which sits atop the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) standings, had three players with a dozen kills each. Preseason Player of the Year Leah Daniel overcame a slow start, finishing with 12 kills on 38 swings with six errors. Natalie Cummins hit a team-best .455 with 12 kills on 22 attacks alongside two errors. Sydney Love posted 12 kills as well. Jordan Gower tracked down 19 digs as Haylie Clark posted 37 assists. Elon finished with a .221 hitting percentage, overcoming a .061 percentage in the first set.

How it Happened
  • Opening the match, Towson jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, including two straight aces from Spengler, pushing the Phoenix into an early timeout.
  • Towson continued its hot start out to an 8-2 advantage before building an 11-3 lead. Lazda had two kills in a 3-0 run while Lydia Wiers accounted for a third kill.
  • The Tigers held a 10-point lead through much of the middle portion of the set, working a 17-7 lead behind a Bakodimou kill. Elon cut the Tigers' lead down to 21-15 and eventually to a five-point Tiger advantage at 23-18. Towson finished the set with back-to-back kills from Morgan Wilson to go up 1-0 in the match.
  • Set two was back-and-forth early before the Phoenix took an 11-6 lead behind a 6-1 run. 
  • Towson clawed its way back into the set, making it a one-point affair at 12-11 Elon, stringing together a 5-1 burst. 
  • The Phoenix kept trying to pull away, but the Tigers reeled Elon back in at 17-15, but the visitors put down an 8-1 burst to finish the set 25-16 and tie the match at one set apiece.
  • Opening set three, Towson worked a 6-3 lead, staving off small runs from Elon and taking a 10-6 advantage. On a 5-1 run, Elon made it a 12-12 set before going on a 5-1 run for a 17-14 lead. The Tigers struggled to pull the set back late as Elon went up 2-1 with an 8-2 run for a 25-17 set win.
  • In the fourth, Towson pushed out to a 7-3 lead, but could not slow an Elon run as the Phoenix took a 12-11 lead. The visitors closed in on match point with a 5-1 run, taking a 20-16 lead.
  • Down but not out, Towson surged back with a 7-1 run of its own for a 23-21 lead. Towson could not finish the set and force a fifth, with Elon capping its first win over Towson since 1998 with a 4-0 run to a 25-23 set-four win.

Behind the Numbers
  • Towson was paced by 10 kills from Jarome while Bakodimou and Lazda added eight apiece. Nikia Mitchell notched seven kills, with four blocks to her credit as well. Lazda led the Tigers with six total blocks as well.
  • One of the top ace-getters in the country, Bakodimou dropped in another four on Saturday afternoon while adding three assists.
  • Towson struggled with unforced errors, committing 12 service errors and 13 unblocked attack errors. Elon led the match with 11 total blocks, getting seven total from Jenn Krzeminski, including six assisted stops.
  • Elon's trio of Cummins, Love and Daniels contributed 12 kills apiece. Cummins hit for .455 on the day, leading the match for those with at least 10 attacks.
  • The Phoenix ended Towson's 24-match home winning streak, which dated back to Sept. 14, 2019. The loss halted Towson's run of 14 straight home wins in CAA matches.
  • Towson dropped a home match against Elon for the first time in the series. It was Elon's first win over Towson since the 1998 campaign, ending a run of 14 straight wins for the Tigers over the Phoenix.

  • The Tigers return to SECU Arena, looking to start anew on Sunday afternoon.
