Kubek and Rivera Secure Double-Doubles as Women's Basketball Defeats Frostburg in Season Opener, 113-59

TOWSON, Md. – Allie Kubek and Anissa Rivera each secured double-doubles in the Towson women's basketball season opening win over Frostburg State, 113-59, on Tuesday night.

Rivera's game-high 21-point, 14-rebound performance marks her 16th career double-double and first at Towson. Kubek's 17-point, 10-rebound game is good for her fourth career double-double. Four other Tigers in Aleah Nelson (19), Ryann Evans (12), Tarriyonna Gary (10) and Skye Williams (12) also reached double-digits. The Tigers' 113 points ties a program-best, set last season against Salem (12/18/20).

Postgame Quote

  • Head Coach Diane Richardson: "It was a good test for us," head coach Diane Richardson said. "Frostburg came in and had a good first half. We wanted to do some things to prepare us for the season and it was a good test. We want teams to have to guard us at every position and to do that, we have to be confident on the ball."

How it Happened

  • Kubek opened scoring for the Tigers with the first basket of the 2021-22 campaign just 24 seconds into the game. With three layups in the first six minutes of the quarter, she helped to give her team the quick 13-4 edge. She also added four off the glass.
  • Frostburg kept it close though, ending the first trailing by just four points.
  • With a jumper from the Bobcats to start off the second period, the opponent came within one point of the lead, the closest they would come all game.
  • After contributing six points in the first, Rivera stayed consistent with seven more points to lead her team going into the half. Evans also added six points and the two junior guard/forwards combined for six boards.
  • After going into the locker room with a 50-44 lead, Towson went on a dominant 16-0 run to start the second half and take a 22-point advantage. The black & gold kept the Bobcats scoreless for over half of the third period. Five different Tigers found the basket during the span to secure a game-best 36 points in the period.
  • Rivera netted eight more points and collected eight rebounds to end the third. Nelson also caught fire, securing eight points, going 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. The point guard also added two helpers.
  • Gary put her team in triple digits with a layup in the fifth minute of the final quarter to give the team the 100-55 edge. The Tigers did not let off the brakes though, as seven unique student-athletes scored in the fourth, including 13 points off the bench.
  • The Towson defense also held the Bobcats to a contest-low seven points to end the game.

Inside the Numbers

  • The win marks the second consecutive season Towson has won its season opener after defeated East Carolina, 89-81, last season (1/25/21). The victory also keeps the black & gold perfect against the Bobcats with a 14-0 all-time record and gives Richardson a 1-0 mark against her alma mater.
  • The 113-point performance is the third triple-figure effort under Richardson after two big wins during the 2020-21 season against Longwood (108) and Salem (113).
  • Five new faces secured their first points in a Tiger uniform on Tuesday night in Rivera (21), Evans (12), Quinzia Fulmore (7), Mariah Wilson (5) and Jamey Napoleon (4).
  • The reigning fastest team in the country stayed true to form, scoring 36 points on fast breaks against the Bobcats. They also forced an impressive 23 turnovers, converting into 30 points.
  • After leading the CAA and ranking top-10 in the NCAA in assists, Nelson picked up where she left off, accounting for nine of the team's 15 dimes.
  • Towson was tough on defense, securing two blocks and 12 total steals. Williams landed both blocks for the team while Wilson and Evans each earned three takeaways.
