ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Towson University baseball team rode a strong pitching performance by game one starter
Josh Seils to split the Saturday doubleheader at Winthrop, winning the first game 7-2 before falling in the second contest 7-3.
Towson (1-5) used a five-run second inning and a 6.1-inning performance by Seils to win the first game. The Tigers tied the second game in the sixth inning, but Winthrop (2-4) broke away with four unanswered runs in the final innings to get the split.
Key Stats:
- Combined in the games, Nolan Young went 3-for-7 with a solo home run, a double and five RBI. Matt Arceo had a strong first game, hitting 2-for-3 with a walk, run and stolen base while Jake Lysaght notched a great performance in game two, hitting 3-for-4 with an RBI.
- As a team, Towson stole six bases in as many attempts. Danny Becerra and Javon Fields each had two stolen bases.
- Josh Seils (1-1) won game one, going 6.1 innings with a run and four strikeouts. Nick Janowicz did not get a decision in his start in game two, going three innings with three runs and two strikeouts. The loss went to Nick Ramanjulu (0-1), who had three runs in 2.2 innings of relief, striking out three. Austin Weber, Jake Pecilunas and Kody Reeser all had scoreless relief outings.
- For Winthrop, Dillon Morton multi-hit in both games, going 5-for-8 with a home run and a double. Daniel Blair (0-1) got the loss in game one, throwing 4.2 innings with five runs and five strikeouts. Starter Tyler Jones threw 4.1 innings with a pair of runs and four strikeouts, with reliever Dalton Mims (1-0) getting the win, throwing the final 3.2 innings scoreless and striking out five.
How It Happened (Game 1):
- Towson got off to a fast start in the first game, starting with having first and second with two out in the top of the second. Jacob Terao put a single into left field to score Nick Brown. Back-to-back walks, the second drawn by Danny Becerra, brought in another run. Next batter, Nolan Young belted a double over the right fielder's head, clearing the bases and making it 5-0 Towson.
- Winthrop got a run back in the following half-inning. With one out and a man in scoring position, Hunter Christopher singled to bring in a run and make it 5-1 Towson.
- Josh Seils stayed in command and got Towson through to the seventh without another run. Austin Weber put out a fire in the seventh to keep the lead at four. In the bottom of the eighth, Winthrop pieced together three straight two-out singles to bring in a run. Cam Clark struck out Joey Tepper to end the inning without anymore damage.
- Towson added insurance in the ninth, getting first and second with two out. Billy Godrick blasted a pitch to left for a double, bringing in Nolan Young and Javon Fields for a five-run Towson lead. Jake Pecilunas entered in the bottom of the ninth and retired the side in order to secure Towson's 7-2 victory.
How It Happened (Game 2):
- The second batter of the game, Nolan Young hit a pitch over the left field wall for his first home run as a Tiger and a 1-0 Towson lead.
- Nick Janowicz went through the first 1-2-3. In the bottom of the second, Winthrop used three hits, a walk and a sacrifice fly to get three runs and lead 3-1.
- Towson countered in the top of the third as Danny Becerra walked with one out. He stole second and third, then scored on a booted ball at third, making it 3-2 Winthrop.
- The score held until the top of the sixth. Brandon Austin led off the inning with a triple in the right-center gap. Next batter, Jake Lysaght brought Austin home on a single to left to tie the game at 3-3.
- In the next half-inning, Dillon Morton hit a leadoff home run to give the home team back the lead. In the next two innings, Winthrop added three more, including a Spencer Yankle RBI double, to go up 7-3.
- Young got hit by a pitch to open the ninth, but Towson could not chip away and fell 7-3.
Inside the Numbers:
- So far in six games played, Towson has 11 stolen bases in as many attempts.
- The win in game one is Towson's first-ever victory over Winthrop. It was the first meeting since 1995.
- Brandon Austin increased his bases-reached streak to 14 games with a triple in game two.
- Danny Becerra and Javon Fields have reached base in all six games so far in 2021.
- Jake Lysaght earned his first career collegiate hit in game two on an infield single in the fourth.
