ROCK HILL, S.C. – The Towson University baseball team nearly grabbed a road series victory in Sunday's rubber match at Winthrop but fell in 12 innings 5-4 to the Eagles.
With Sunday's game serving as a rubber match due to a Saturday doubleheader split, Towson (1-6) led 4-2 after seven innings, aided by solo home runs from
Jacob Terao and
Brandon Austin. Winthrop (3-4) scored runs in the eighth and ninth to force extras and walked-off in the 12
th.
Key Stats:
- Brandon Austin and Jacob Terao each went 1-for-4 with their respective solo home runs, hitting them in the second inning. Jake Lysaght went 1-for-2, reaching base three times on a double, walk and hit-by-pitch plus stealing a base.
- On the pitching end, Danny Madden had a no-decision in his start, throwing five innings with two runs and one strikeout. Andalo Santangelo, Austin Weber and Cam Clark had scoreless outings, the last going two extra innings. The loss went to Justin Rebok, who had a run allowed in the 12th.
- For Winthrop, Andrew Jenner went 3-for-4 with two RBI, stealing a base. Tyler Baker brought in the game-winning run on a fielder's choice in the 12th. Starter Andrew Coker did not get a decision after throwing three innings with two runs and two Ks. Dalton Skinner (2-0) got the win, throwing a scoreless 12th.
How It Happened:
- Towson ratcheted up the power in the second inning as Jacob Terao hit a solo home run with one out. Two batters later, Brandon Austin hit a solo home run of his own to make it 2-0 Towson.
- The home team tied the game in the next two innings with RBI singles in the second and third to put the score at 2-2.
- The Tigers grabbed the lead back in the top of the fifth, beginning by getting first and second with two outs. Nolan Young slapped a single to center to score Jake Lysaght and put Danny Becerra on third. Next batter, a wild pitch brought Becerra home for a 4-2 Towson advantage.
- Towson's pitching held until the bottom of the eighth as Winthrop tried to rally. Taking advantage of an error in the infield, Joseph Szvetitz singled to bring in a run, pulling the Eagles within one.
- Towson got a runner on third with two out in the top of the ninth but could not score. Next half-inning, Winthrop got runners to the corners and one out. A run scored on an error at third to tie the game. The Tigers forced a double play two batters later to force extra innings.
- With Cam Clark holding on the pitching end, Towson got Ryan Terrents to third with one out, but could not bring him in. The following half-inning, Winthrop got the bases full with one out. A groundball and throw back to the plate was not in time as Winthrop walked off for the 5-4 win.

- Danny Becerra and Javon Fields have reached base in all seven games played this season. Dating back to last season, Brandon Austin has reached base in 15 consecutive games played.
