Towson Baseball Downed by Georgia Southern in Series Opener

STATESBORO, Ga. – Despite strong efforts down the stretch from the Tiger bullpen, the Towson University baseball team fell to Georgia Southern 5-1 in the series opener on Friday night.

With the Tigers down three in the early innings, a Nick Brown RBI single and attempts on the basepaths helped Towson (1-7) try to defeat its Sun Belt foe, but Georgia Southern's (4-5) early lead held in the game.

Key Stats:
  • Seven of the nine Tigers in the starting lineup reached base safely.  Nick Brown went 1-for-4 with an RBI single in the fourth inning while Javon Fields was 1-for-4 with two stolen bases.  As a team, Towson had four stolen bases.
  • On the pitching end, Josh Seils (1-2) got the loss with five runs, four earned, in five innings with five strikeouts.  The bullpen of Nolan Bolt, Pete Marchineck and Matt Watters combined for three innings, no hits, one walk and five strikeouts.
  • For Georgia Southern, Jason Swan hit 3-for-4 with an RBI while Austin Thompson was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs.  Starter Tyler Owens went four innings with a run in a no decision.  Reliever David Johnson (2-0) threw two scoreless innings with Braden Hays getting the save with the final three scoreless innings thrown, striking out four.
How It Happened:
  • Georgia Southern struck early in the first two frames, using a Noah Ledford RBI single and a Christian Avant RBI sacrifice bunt in the first, then a passed ball allowed a run to score in the second to make it 3-0 Eagles.
  • Towson got a run back in the top of the fourth.  After Burke Camper walked and Javon Fields bunted his way to a single and two runners on, Nick Brown ripped a ball to left for an RBI single, making it 3-1 GSU.
  • Josh Seils had scoreless innings in the third and fourth, but in the fifth, GSU pieced together a pair of doubles and a single for two more runs to go up 5-1.
  • The Towson bullpen of Nolan Bolt, Pete Marchineck and Matt Watters held GSU without anymore runs, but the Tigers could not chip away and fell 5-1.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Towson had its first caught stealing of the season tonight but stands 16-for-17 on stolen bases this year.
