Jeter Drops 37 as Women's Basketball Completes Sweep over Charleston

TOWSON, Md. – Kionna Jeter dropped a career-high and tied a CAA (Colonial Athletic Association) season-high 37 points as Towson women's basketball completed its sweep over the College of Charleston with an 84-63 win on Sunday afternoon at SECU Arena. The Tigers beat the Cougars 90-81 on Saturday. 

Aleah Nelson also had a stellar performance, netted 17 of her own points as well as a game-high six assists and career-best nine rebounds. Allie Kubek also snatched eight off the glass. Shavonne Smith added 10 points, her 10th double-digit performance in 11 outings. 

Arynn Eady scored 20 points for the College of Charleston while Amira Williams grabbed eight off the boards.  

Jeter (65), Nelson (29) and Smith (25) combined for a grand total of 119 points over the weekend series.  

Records:  

  • Towson – 9-3 (4-1 CAA) 
  • Charleston – 6-6 (2-4 CAA) 

Key Stats:  

  • Jeter has scored 10 or more points in 20 consecutive games and 41 of her last 42 dating back to the 2018-19 season. As a Tiger, Jeter has scored in double figures 68 times in 74 career games.  
  • Jeter's 37-point performance is tied with Delaware's Jasmine Dickey. Dickey set the conference season-best on Jan. 16 at Hofstra in the Blue Hens 76-55 win.  
  • Towson led the game for 36:39 of Sunday's contest as well as 33:30 on Saturday. The Tigers led the Cougars for a total of 70:09 over 80 minutes of play this weekend.  
  • The Tigers scored 24 points off the fast break during Saturday's contest to the Cougars' two. The Tigers are among the top transition teams in Division I women's basketball, leading the nation in transition points with 32.9 points per game as of Jan. 25.  

Postgame Quotes: 

  • Head Coach Diane Richardson: "We didn't let up. Our defense was aggressive and we continued to pound and pound. We stepped into the passing lanes and forced them to take some bad shots. Our defense was really on point today." 
  • Senior guard Kionna Jeter: "My teammates help me out a lot. They encourage me to shoot the ball a lot so that is what I did today." 

How it Happened:  

  • Jeter opened scoring with a layup off a steal to give Towson the advantage. The senior guard scored 14 in the first quarter, going 6-9 from the field and 2-3 from beyond the arc. 
  • Smith went 2-2 shooting from the field during the quarter, scoring the latter bucket with 2:25 to go, to give the Tigers the 15-12 edge.  
  • The Cougars kept it close to start the second quarter, with Eady making a layup to cut the score to 26-25 just three minutes into action.  
  • The Tigers ended up going into the locker room with the 38-33 advantage.  
  • Towson went on a 13-point run to start of the third quarter and take the commanding 54-39 lead. The Tigers saw four different scorers during the stanza including five points from Jeter and Nelson, respectively.  
  • Towson's defense held Charleston to nine points in the third.  
  • Nelson hit a buzzer at the end of the third to give The Tigers the 56-42 lead going into the last 10 minutes of play.  
  • Jeter didn't let up, dropping 10 of Towson's 28 fourth quarter points.  
  • The Cougars went on a 7-point run with 30-seconds left to go in the contest, but it wasn't enough. 
  • A late driving layup by Narrie Dodson put the Tigers up by 14-points and helped solidify the victory. 

Inside the Numbers:  

  • Nelson has topped the Tigers in assists in each of the 12 games this season. The sophomore from Baltimore is averaging 7.1 assists per contest.
