Ninth Inning Rally Sends Towson Baseball to Comeback Victory at VCU

RICHMOND, Va. – The Towson University baseball team rallied in the ninth with a Noah Cabrera two-run home run and Danny Becerra RBI single to win 8-7 at VCU to even the weekend series.

In a wild game that saw the Tigers tie the game four times, Towson (2-11) went ahead for the first time since the opening inning with three runs in the ninth at VCU (7-7).  Nolan Bolt came in the ninth and held Towson's one-run lead for the victory.

Key Stats:
  • Noah Cabrera hit his first home run of the season, going 1-for-4 with two RBI, a stolen base and a walk.  Danny Becerra was 3-for-6 with two runs, a steal and an RBI while Nolan Young finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs, an RBI, a walk and a steal.
  • Towson was dominant on the basepaths, stealing seven bases without being caught.  Seven different Tigers stole a base.
  • On the mound, starter Nick Janowicz had a no-decision with four runs and three strikeouts in 3.2 innings thrown.  Reliever Cam Clark (1-0) picked up the victory with a run in 1.1 innings of relief while Nolan Bolt earned his first career save with a shutout ninth.
  • For VCU, Tyler Locklear hit 2-for-4 with a home run, a run and two RBI.  Starter Michael Dailey did not get a decision after going 3.1 innings with two runs.  The loss went to Edwin Serrano (0-2), who surrendered three runs in the final two innings pitched.
How It Happened:
  • Small ball brought Towson's first run across after a Danny Becerra single and Matt Arceo walk.  After a Billy Godrick sacrifice bunt, Brandon Austin hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Becerra and make it 1-0.
  • VCU went ahead in the next half-inning off a Tyler Locklear solo home run and a Steven Carpenter RBI single for a 2-1 advantage.
  • Nick Janowicz held down the Rams in the second and third innings.  Top of the fourth, more small ball as with runners on the corners, Nolan Young perfectly placed a bunt to second for a single, scoring Godrick and tying the game at 2-2.
  • VCU got back the lead in the bottom of the fourth off a Devin Barnett RBI fielder's choice and a Locklear RBI single.
  • Top of the fifth, Towson got the bases jammed with two outs.  Noah Cabrera reached on an error at first, which allowed two runs to score and tie the game at 4-4.
  • Again VCU countered in a following half-inning, combining a walk and a Carpenter triple to go back in front 5-4 after five inning.
  • Into the seventh inning, again Towson loaded the bases off a single and two walks.  Burke Camper got a run in on a deep sacrifice fly to tie the game at 5-5.
  • The Rams picked up runners on the corners with one out in the bottom of the seventh.  Towson nearly turned two on a ground ball by Logan Amiss but instead being a fielder's choice.  A run scored to get VCU ahead 6-5, then in the eighth, another RBI single put the Rams ahead 7-5.
  • Young drew a four-pitch walk to begin the ninth.  On a 2-1 count, Noah Cabrera hit a home run over the left field fence to tie the game.  Jake Lysaght followed with an infield single to short, taking second on a Jacob Terao sacrifice bunt.  Two batters later, Becerra knocked a single to center to plate Lysaght and give Towson an 8-7 lead.
  • Nolan Bolt entered the game.  VCU got first and second with no out.  On a comebacker to the pitcher, Bolt got the lead for the first out, then a fly out to left advanced the runners to scoring position with two out.  Bolt struck out the next batter looking to finish the game in favor of Towson 8-7.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Brandon Austin has reached base in 20 straight games dating back to last season.  In addition, Danny Becerra has been on base in all 13 games this year.
  • This is the first comeback victory for Towson this season.
