RICHMOND, Va. – The Towson University baseball team looked to get a series victory in the Sunday matinee at VCU but came up short in a 5-1 defeat despite a
Jacob Terao home run and
Danny Madden six-inning start.
With Terao's home run in the third and Madden allowing just two runs in six innings, Towson (2-12) trailed just 2-1 to VCU (8-7) going into the seventh inning. The Rams added insurance in the seventh and eighth innings for the four-run win.
Key Stats:
- Jacob Terao hit his second home run of the season, a solo shot in the third inning, to finish 1-for-3 in the game. Matt Arceo hit 2-for-4 while Nolan Young reached base twice, going 1-for-3 with a walk.
- Danny Madden (0-1) had his longest start of the year, going six innings with two runs allowed and striking out six despite the defeat.
- For VCU, Jack Schroeder drove in two runs in a 1-for-4 afternoon. The win went to reliever Campbell Ellis (2-0), who went the middle three innings scoreless, with Tyler Davis throwing the final three innings for the save with no runs and striking out six.
How It Happened:
- VCU got on the board in the first despite Danny Madden beginning the inning with two strikeouts. Liam Hibbits singled, got to second in a wild pitch and came home on a Jack Schroeder RBI single.
- Towson equalized in the top of the third as Jacob Terao took a 2-0 pitch over the left field fence for a solo home run, tying the game at 1-1.
- Madden threw a couple of clean innings until the bottom of the fourth when a Logan Amiss home run made it 2-1. Madden held VCU to two runs through the sixth inning.
- VCU added two insurance, unearned runs off a pair of fielder's choice plays in the seventh, then added another RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to lead 5-1.
- Nolan Young began the top of the ninth with a walk, but Towson could not rally and fell 5-1.
Inside the Numbers:
- Brandon Austin's 20-game bases reached streak was snapped today. Danny Becerra increased his based reached streak to 14 games with a walk in the third.
- Of Towson's first 14 games this season, 13 have been on the road.
