Towson Baseball Downed in Mid-Week at ACC Powerhouse Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Towson University baseball team took on Atlantic Coast Conference power Virginia for a Wednesday mid-week, falling to the Cavaliers 5-0.
 
Towson (2-13) had four pitchers throw a scoreless inning each and threatened with early runners in scoring position, but Virginia's (8-8) early lead proved decisive.
 
Key Stats:
  • Javon Fields had Towson's lone hit of the afternoon, going 1-for-2 with a walk and a stolen base.
  • As a team, Towson stole three bases, including one each from Fields, Danny Becerra and Nick Brown.
  • Towson starter Kody Reeser (0-2) got the loss, striking out four and allowing one run in two innings.  Nolan Bolt, Andalo Santangelo, Austin Weber and Jake Pecilunas all had scoreless innings.
  • For Virginia, Brendan Rivoli finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI.  The win went to reliever Paul Kosanovich (1-1), who pitched the 3rd through the 5th with no runs and a strikeout.
How It Happened:
  • Towson got a runner to scoring position in each of the first three innings, but could not get a run across.  Virginia combined a walk, bunt single and an RBI double, the final play by Logan Michaels, to lead 1-0.
  • In the bottom of the third, UVA earned hits in their first four at-bats for three runs, capped by a two-run double by Brendan Rivoli, to be up 4-0.
  • Javon Fields knocked a two-out single to right and stole second in the fifth, but could not advance. UVA added a run in the sixth and won the game 5-0.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Danny Becerra has reached base in all 15 Towson games this year.
  • Towson has played 14 of its first 15 games of 2021 on the road.
Next Game:
Towson has its first home weekend of the 2021 season beginning on Friday, March 19.  The Tigers host UMass at 3 p.m. at John B. Schuerholz Park.
