TOWSON, Md. – Blanking its opponent in 16 of 18 innings on Saturday, the Towson University baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of UMass at home, winning game one 8-7 and the second contest 4-0.
Towson (4-13) built a seven-run lead in game one vs. UMass (4-5) and held off the Minutemen in the ninth to win by one, then earned its first shutout victory since March 15, 2019 in the second game.
Key Stats:
- Josh Seils (2-3) had one of his top starts of his collegiate career, winning game one with seven innings, one run and 10 strikeouts. In game two, Nick Janowicz (1-0) went the longest outing of his Towson career, throwing 5.1 scoreless with six strikeouts.
- Austin Weber picked up his first save of the year, getting the final out of game one. He, Cam Clark, Kody Reeser and Jake Pecilunas all had scoreless relief outings. Towson pitching held UMass to hitting .150 in the doubleheader.
- On the hitting end, Javon Fields was a home run shy of the cycle on the day, going 3-for-8 with an RBI. Nick Brown was 3-for-7, getting a steal, scoring twice and driving in two while Billy Godrick reached base five times, going 2-for-5 with two runs, a triple, three free passes and a stolen base. Jacob Terao hit 2-for-4 in game one for a double and two RBI while Bryce Frederick hit his first collegiate home run, a solo shot in game one.
- For UMass, Aidan Wilde finished 2-for-8, including a grand slam in the first game. Each starting pitcher got losses: Jack Steele (2-1) threw five innings with six runs and six strikeouts in game one while Max LbBlanc (0-1) fell in the second contest with four runs, three earned, in 4.2 innings with four strikeouts.
How It Happened (Game 1):
- With Josh Seils holding down the Minutemen primarily with strikeouts, Towson got four consecutive singles to begin the inning, capped by an RBI single on a flare to right by Javon Fields. Three batters later, Jack McLaughlin roped a single to left-center to plate two and give Towson a 3-0 lead.
- The bats stayed hot in the next inning for the Tigers, beginning with a walk and double for second and third. Nick Brown lined a single to left for a run home, then Jacob Terao blasted a pitch to right-center, resulting in a two-run double. Towson led 6-0 after three.
- UMass got its first run off an Eddy Hart RBI single in the fifth.
- Towson countered in the bottom of the sixth against the UMass bullpen, beginning with a Bryce Frederick solo home run on the first at bat of the inning. Later, with second and third and one out, Noah Cabrera brought in a run on a ground out to third, putting Towson up 8-1.
- UMass had a final rally in the ninth, getting the bases loaded with two out. A walk then a grand slam by Aidan Wilde brought the Minutemen within two, then later, a Jack Whorf RBI single put the potential tying run on second. Austin Weber induced a fly out to end the game as Towson held for the victory 8-7.
How It Happened (Game 2):
- Towson's first half-inning at bat saw the bats keep going. Man on second, one out, Billy Godrick launched a ball to right-center for an RBI triple, then next batter, Noah Cabrera crushed the ball off the left field wall to complete an RBI double.
- With Nick Janowicz locking down the Minutemen, Towson added a run in the third off an RBI single from Nick Brown to lead 3-0.
- Heads up base running by Billy Godrick resulted in another run in the fifth: he walked, took second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on a throwing error by the catcher to give Towson a 4-0 advantage.
- Janowicz pitched into the sixth, where the bullpen took over. Cam Clark, Kody Reeser and Jake Pecilunas combined to allow one baserunner the rest of the way as Towson took the win 4-0.
Inside the Numbers:
- Towson's last shutout win was on March 15, 2019, an 8-0 home victory over Fordham. In Fordham's lineup that game was current Tiger Billy Godrick.
- These were the first-ever baseball games between Towson and UMass.
- Danny Becerra extended his bases reached streak to 16 in game one, but the streak was snapped in the second game.
