Softball Completes La Salle Sweep Sunday Afternoon

TOWSON, Md. -- Battling blustery conditions at the Tiger Softball Stadium, the Towson University softball team completed its weekend sweep of La Salle University Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers picked up a 12-4 win on Sunday, paired with two wins Saturday over the Explorers by 14-8 and 9-1 counts.

Towson (7-3) was led by center fielder Nicole Kidwiler, who went 3-for-4 with five RBIs and a pair of doubles. Julia Jackson pitched four innings for the Tigers, forcing seven ground outs along with two strikeouts. Madeline Harris pitched the final two innings of the game, getting three ground outs from her defense and a pair of strikeouts. Towson had eight different runners score, led by three from Mackenzie Lake.

La Salle (0-3) got two runs from Ashley Mendenhall in her three at-bats. Sarah Dowalo pitched four innings in the loss. Regan Ware threw the final one and two-thirds innings for the Explorers. The pair combined for two strikeouts, but allowed four extra-base hits.

How it Happened
  • Towson retired the Explorers in order during the first inning, all groundouts. In the Tiger half, Kidwiler flew out to leftfield, but allowed Jackson to score and moved Lake to third. Towson went up 2-0 after Lake reached home on a groundout from Chloe Poulich.
  • La Salle tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the second with Victoria Zatko and Mendenhall scoring. The Tigers scored in the bottom half for a 3-2 lead after Cali Christopher doubled down the right field line to bring home Gracyn Houmis
  • Neither team reached home in the third frame, but the Tiger bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth as Towson scored five times. Lake singled, which pushed Lauren Civetti home. Kidwiler doubled to the center field wall, bringing in Lake, Jackson and Jess DaBreo. In the next at-bat, Poulich reached second on a right-fielder error, bringing Kidwiler around.
  • The Explorers made a late push in the top of the sixth inning, crossing Mendenhall and Kaylee Piven, cutting Towson's lead in half, 8-4.
  • Towson ended the game early with four more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Lake scored on a Kidwiler double, with the later scoring on the next at-bat with a Poulich double. Poulich scored on a fly out to right field from Houmis, which also moved Lauren Ringhiser to third. Ringhiser scored the final run after Lindsey Toneygay reached on an error.
Behind the Numbers
  • Towson hit .412 as a team with 14 hits on 34 chances. Kidwiler went 3-for-4 while Lake, Poulich and Houmis each went 2-for-4.
  • Kidwiler knocked in five runs for a game-best while Poulich had a pair of RBIs. Lake stole two bases in the Sunday showdown with Kidwiler, Ringhiser and Houmis each grabbing one stolen base.
