Townsend Sabur and Florenzo Score as Field Hockey Falls To Syracuse in Season Opener

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University field hockey team dropped a tough decision to Syracuse, 3-2 during the opening contest of the 2021 spring season on Sunday afternoon. 

The Tigers kept the game extremely close with a strong defensive performance, holding The Orange scoreless through the final two quarters. Syracuse finished the 2019 fall season ranked No. 14 in the country. 

Kasey Bubel had three big defensive saves. In goal graduate student transfer Lena Vandam got her first start in the Black and Gold, registering 12 saves.  

On the other side of the ball, Kaya Townsend Sabur and Jenna Florenzo each put one in goal for Towson. 

For The Orange, Pleun Lammers scored two goals and added an assist.

HOW IT HAPPENED 

  • Syracuse came out on the offensive, scoring two goals in the first 4:45 of action to take the 2-0 lead.  
  • Freshman Townsend Sabur cut the deficit to 2-1 with a goal at the 13:20 mark of the first quarter.  
  • Senior captain Florenzo knotted the score at two with a goal to start off the second quarter.  
  • Lammers scored her second goal of the game just before halftime to give Syracuse the 3-2 advantage.  
  • The Tigers had a huge defensive third quarter, stopping 10 penalty corners in the span. Towson stopped eight consecutive corners in the final four minutes.  
  • The contest finished on a quiet final quarter, with Vandam stopping just one shot. 

BEYOND THE BOX 

  • Townsend Sabur's goal to put the Tigers on the board marks the first of her collegiate career. 
  • Bubel matched her 2019 defensive save total during the 2021 spring opener, registering three against The Orange.
