TOWSON, Md. – Down 2-0 in the bottom of the ninth with one hit in the game at that point, the Towson University baseball team used patience at the plate and small ball to come back and walk off against George Mason 3-2.
Towson (5-15) tied the game vs. George Mason (3-9) on a squeeze bunt by
Jacob Terao, setting up two on and one out. Following a
Javon Fields bunt single,
Danny Becerra roped a hit past the shortstop to score
Jake Lysaght and send Towson to victory.
This is the second game this year where Towson trailed in the ninth and came back to win. The Tigers were down 7-5 at VCU on March 13
th and won 8-7.
Key Stats:
- Danny Becerra reached base twice on the game-winning RBI single plus a walk, going 1-for-4. Javon Fields reached base twice on a 1-for-3 day, adding a hit-by-pitch.
- Josh Seils had a second consecutive strong start on the mound, going 6.1 innings with two runs and seven strikeouts in the no-decision. Cam Clark and Austin Weber (1-0) each pitched one-and-a-third scoreless, with Weber taking the win as the pitcher of record in the ninth.
- For George Mason, Peter Nielsen went 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring a run. Starter Jared Lyons got a no-decision with 8.1 innings and two runs, each allowed in the ninth, and 10 strikeouts. Reliever Mason Posey (0-1) had the loss with the last run charged in the ninth.
How It Happened:
- George Mason got the first score in the top of the second, piecing together a single, sacrifice bunt and another single for a run.
- Josh Seils retired nine consecutive batters and held George Mason in check until the seventh inning. A RBI double by Kyle Hayes brought in a run, with Danny Becerra getting a nice throw to home to stop a potential third run. But, George Mason led 2-0.
- In the bottom of the ninth, Towson had two runners on with one out, getting them in scoring position with a wild pitch. Burke Camper walked, and on ball four, a wild pitch allowed Matt Arceo to score. With runners on the corners, Jacob Terao put down a safety squeeze, with Nate Mills beating the throw home. After Javon Fields loaded the bases on an infield single, Danny Becerra knocked a single past the diving shortstop to score Jake Lysaght and complete the 3-2 walk-off victory.

- Josh Seils has gone at least 6.1 innings in his last two starts, combining for 13.1 innings and 17 strikeouts.
- Towson's last walk-off win came on March 6, 2020 in a 6-5 victory over Lafayette. Jacob Terao hit an RBI single to score Nick Brown for the game-winning run.
- Javon Fields has reached base in his last seven games while Nick Brown has been on in his last six games.
