Madden Strong Start, Terao Three RBI Lead Towson Baseball to Split at George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. – After falling victim to a walk-off home run in game one in a 10-9 defeat, the Towson University baseball team recovered and rode a great six-inning start from Danny Madden and three RBI from Jacob Terao to win game two 5-1 (7) to get a doubleheader split in Fairfax.

With the split today, Towson (6-16) leads in the series 2-1 vs. George Mason (4-10) headed into Sunday.

Key Stats:
  • At the plate, Nolan Young combined to hit 5-for-10 with three runs and an RBI. Jacob Terao went 2-for-3 with three RBI plate appearances in the second game while Bryce Frederick was 3-for-5 in the combined games, walking twice and scoring a run.
  • Towson was a perfect 4-for-4 on the basepaths, with Danny Becerra having two steals.
  • On the mound, game one starter Nick Janowicz had six runs and two strikeouts in 1.2 innings.  Kody Reeser pitched six innings of relief with two runs, with the loss going to Jake Pecilunas (0-2) with two runs in the ninth.  Game two saw Danny Madden (1-2) go six of the seven innings, allowing one run and striking out five.  Austin Weber picked up the save, stranding two runners in the seventh with one-third of an inning thrown.
  • For George Mason, Ryan Stoudemire hit 4-for-7 combined with a double and an RBI while Cooper Mrowka had the two-run home run in the ninth of game one for the walk-off.  Kieran Versaw Barnes started game one with six innings, three runs and a trio of strikeouts with reliever Mason Posey (2-1) getting the win with the final one-third of an inning thrown.  The starter of game two, Stoudemire (1-4), got the loss with three runs in four innings, striking out seven.
How It Happened (Game 1):
  • Towson got on the board first in the second inning, beginning with Burke Camper and Bryce Frederick getting hits to put second and third with one out.  Matt Arceo knocked a double to left-center to bring in both Tigers on base.  After a Javon Fields single, Danny Becerra reached on a ball in the infield, allowing Arceo to score for a 3-0 Towson advantage.
  • George Mason countered in the following half-inning.  Using four hits and three free passes, the Patriots scored six runs to lead 6-3.
  • With Kody Reeser holding down the Patriots in relief, Towson rallied in the late innings, getting a Nolan Young RBI single in the seventh and a Becerra bases loaded walk in the eighth to bring the Tigers within one.
  • George Mason scored two back in the eighth to lead by three going into the ninth.  Three singles in four at-bats, including an RBI knock by Noah Cabrera, got Towson back within two.  With two out and the bases full, Becerra drove a ball into the gap and brought home three to give Towson back the lead.
  • Towson got the first two out in the bottom of the ninth, but a single then a two-run home run hit by Cooper Mrowka gave George Mason the game 10-9.
How It Happened (Game 2):
  • The second game flashed early signs of a potential pitching duel with no runs in the opening two innings.  Towson got first and second, and with one out, Noah Cabrera knocked a single to left to bring in a run.  After a Bryce Frederick walk, a Jacob Terao sacrifice fly and Jake Lysaght reaching on an error to get another run in put Towson up 3-0.
  • Danny Madden was dominant on the mound, not allowing more than one runner in any of the first five innings.  In the top of the fifth, Terao added another run of a ground-rule double to left to score a run and give Towson a 4-0 advantage.
  • Terao put another run across in the top of the sixth.  With the bases loaded, Terao got hit by a pitch to push across another run as the Tigers led 5-0.
  • George Mason loaded the bases up with one out.  Madden struck out a batter then allowed a walk for a run, but struck out the next batter to hold the lead at four.
  • Cam Clark and Austin Weber combined to keep George Mason off the board in the seventh, despite the Patriots getting the tying run on deck.  Weber induced a foul out to finish the game as Towson won 5-1.
