TOWSON, Md. – For the second straight home game, the Towson University baseball team got to walk off in victory, defeating George Mason 6-5 to take the series win.
Down 5-4 in the eighth, Towson (7-16) scored a run on a George Mason (4-11) fielding error. Then in the ninth, with the bases loaded and no outs,
Nolan Young knocked an RBI single to right to give Towson the victory.
Towson takes three of four games vs. George Mason to win the series.
Key Stats:
- Nolan Young's walk-off hit scored Javon Fields for the win. Young finished 1-for-4 with a walk and an RBI while Fields went 1-for-2 with his first collegiate home run, scoring twice. Burke Camper hit a two-run home run to straight-away center, finishing 2-for-4. Noah Cabrera also was 2-for-4, driving in a run and scoring once.
- Starter Nick Ramanjulu had a no-decision, striking out five and allowing two runs in five innings. Six out of seven Towson relievers did not have a run charged to them, with the final reliever, Jake Pecilunas (1-2), earning the victory with a scoreless ninth.
- For George Mason, Scott Morgan had a solo home run, going 1-for-5. Starter Austin Cabone threw six innings with four runs and 10 strikeouts. Reliever Mason Posey (2-2) got the loss, getting two innings with two unearned runs and three strikeouts.
How It Happened:
- Towson got to work quickly in the bottom of the first, all with two out. With Billy Godrick on third, Noah Cabrera roped a single to center for an RBI. Next batter, Burke Camper sent a pitch over the center field wall for a two-run home run, giving Towson a 3-0 advantage.
- George Mason got its run in the following half-inning: with the bases loaded and one out, a fielder's choice led to a run scoring as Towson led 3-1.
- Towson got that run back in a big way. Javon Fields blasted a pitch to left field for his first collegiate home run and a 4-1 Towson lead.
- Nick Ramanjulu pitched through the fifth inning, allowing a solo home run but having the lead 4-2 through five.
- In the top of the sixth against the Towson bullpen, George Mason took advantage of five free passes and a wild pitch to score three and lead 5-4.
- Towson got runners on in the next couple of innings and equalized in the eighth from an error on a groundball to short, allowing Nolan Young to score from second.
- In the ninth, following a shutout inning from Jake Pecilunas, Fields drew an eight-pitch walk to begin. Danny Becerra got aboard from a bunt single, then each Fields and Becerra advanced a base on a throwing error. Following an intentional walk for Godrick, Young belted a ball over the right-fielder's head for the walk-off RBI single, giving Towson the 6-5 victory.
Inside the Numbers:
- Towson's last three games have involved walk-offs. The Tigers walked off in game one on a Danny Becerra single while George Mason walked off in game two in Fairfax.
- Javon Fields has reached base his last 10 games while Billy Godrick is on a five-game hitting streak.
- This is Towson's first series victory of the year.
