Kidwiler Homers; Towson Takes Two over Rhode Island

TOWSON, Md. – It was a double victory for the Towson University softball team Saturday afternoon as they defeated Rhode Island in the Tiger Softball Stadium.

In game one, Towson (2-1) was defeated Rhode Island (0-4) 7-3 than kept the bats hot to win game two 6-5.

Nicole Kidwiler had her first home run of the season in game one.

How it Happened- Game 1
  • The game was scoreless up till the fourth inning when Rhode Island stuck first after Sami Villareal reached base with a double and Ari Castillo singled bringing her home.
  • The Rams would go up two runs after scoring in the bottom of the fifth.
  • The bats got hot for the Tigers in the top of fifth helping them to take a 3-1 lead after a single to center by Chloe Poulich scored two of the runners on base. After a wild pitch Lauren Ringhiser scored.
  • Towson would add to its lead in the bottom of the sixth after Mackenzie Lake reached base on a single to center field and Jess DaBreo reached on a single, Gracyn Houmis had a two run RBI after her double to center field. (5-1)
  • Kidwiler had a two run homer to extend the lead 7-1.
  • The Rams would score one more run in the top of the seventh, then Julia Jackson got the last batter out on a fly-out to centerfield.
  • Jackson pitched the entire game with two strikeouts.
Inside the Numbers – Game 1
  • Ringhiser and Houmis both had doubles for the Tigers.
  • This was Kidwiler's second home run in her career.
  • Jackson moves to 1-0 after today's game.
  • Towson finished the game with seven runs on 11 hits with zero errors.
How it Happened- Game 2
  • Towson took an early 3-0 lead after scoring in the bottom of the second. Poulich had a double to center field and Madyson Peters had a walk to get on base when Lake doubled to center field scoring both runners. Then, Rylee Penrod doubled to center field scoring Lake.
  • The Rams would cut into the lead 3-1 after Alex Pleasic reached base on a walk and Castillo singled to first base scoring her.
  • The Tigers added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-1 lead. Jackson had a single to center field scoring Kidwiler who reached base on a walk. Then, Jackson scored after a Ringhiser single and Poulich scored after a DaBreo's at-bat.
  • Rhode Island would cut into the lead in the top of the sixth and seventh inning after scoring two runs in the top of the sixth and two runs in the seventh (6-5.)
  • Madeline Harris struck out the Rams last batter swinging to end the game.
Inside the Numbers- Game 2
  • Poulich had two doubles for the Tigers, while Lake and Penord had one a piece.
  • Melissa Abrahamian pitched 6.1 innings with one strikeout and earned the win making her record 1-1.
  • Harris earned the save having two strikeouts.
  • The Tigers finished the game with six runs on 11 hits and zero errors.
Quotable-Head Coach Lisa Costello
"I was excited about how we improved all three areas of our game from yesterday," said Costello. 
"Pitchers did a good job and made the adjustments they were asked to. Defensively we cleaned up some things and we had a much better approach at the plate and made adjustments quickly. Hopefully we can continue tomorrow!"

Up Next
Towson is back home tomorrow, March 7 for a double header against local team Coppin. The game is slated to begin at 1 p.m. inside Tiger Softball Stadium.
