Softball Wins a Pair against Coppin

TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University softball team went 4-1 over the weekend after taking a pair from Coppin Sunday afternoon.

The Tigers (4-1) defeated Coppin (0-4) inside Tiger Softball Stadium 3-2 in game one and 13-5 in the second game.

How it Happened- Game 1
  • The Eagles got on the board first with two runs to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Towson cut into the lead in the bottom of the first after a Mackenzie Lake single advabced the runners on base scoring Lauren Ringhiser.
  • Towson would then tie the game in the bottom of the sixth after Nicole Kidwiler doubled to center field scoring Jess DaBreo.
  • Then Ringhiser doubled to centerfield scoring Kidwiler to give the Tigers the 3-2 advantage.
Inside the Numbers
  • Julia Jackson pitched 3.2 innings with one strikeout.
  • Melissa Abrahamian was the winning pitcher having pitched 3 innings with four strikeouts. She moves to 2-0 this season.
  • Kidwiler, Ringhiser and Cali Christopher each a double in a game.
  • This is Kidwiler's second double this season.
How it Happened-Game 2
  • The Tigers got the bats rolling early in the first inning scoring three runs to take a 3-0 lead. Kidwiler led off with a single to center field, then Jackson singled to left field. A Ringhiser double scored them both. Ringhiser would then score on a popup from Bre McDowell.
  • Towson would then add four more runs on two hits in the bottom of the second to give the Tigers a 7-0 lead.
  • Then in the bottom of the third after Kidwiler reached base on a single, Chloe Poulich scored her after reaching base from a walk. Another single from Lake scored Jackson who reached base from a walk and Poulich scored on a wild picth.
  • Coppin cut into the lead in the top of the fourth after scoring two runs on three hits. (10-2 Towson)
  • The Eagles then added three more runs in the top of the fifth to make the score 10-5.
  • Towson would seal the deal in the bottom of the sixth adding three more runs on four hits. Katie Capizzi had a walk-off single to right field to bring in the winning run.
Inside the Numbers- Game 2
  • Madeline Harris pitched 4.2 innings with three strikeouts and was the winning pitcher in her first start for the Tigers.
  • McDowell pitched 1.1 innings with two strikeouts.
  • Five different Tigers all had doubles.
Quotable-Head Coach Lisa Costello
"While we still have things we need to continue to work on we are seeing a lot of fight out of this team," said Costello. "We are picking each other up and getting great production from up and down our line up."  

Up Next
Towson is back at home on Wednesday, March 10 to take on Howard inside the Tiger Softball Stadium for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. Due to COVID protocol only a fans and family of the Towson team are allowed in the stadium and must be on the pass list.
