Towson Baseball Goes Back-and-Forth in Getaway Game at GSU, Narrowly Falls

STATESBORO, Ga. – The Towson University baseball team engaged in a back-and-forth battle in the Sunday series finale at Georgia Southern, leading after five innings, but fell to the Eagles 6-5.

Towson (1-9) lost the lead in the bottom of the sixth to GSU (6-5), tying the game in the seventh.  After the Eagles got a run in the bottom half of the seventh, Towson got second and third with two out in the top of the ninth, but had both runners stranded.

Key Stats:
  • Two Tigers had multi-hit performances: Brandon Austin and Danny Becerra each had two hits, a double and an RBI, with the later adding two runs.  Billy Godrick went 1-for-4, driving in two runs.
  • On the pitching side, starter Danny Madden had a no-decision, striking out seven in 3.2 innings with three runs allowed.  The loss went to reliever Andalo Santangelo (0-1) with the run in the seventh, going 1.1 innings with three strikeouts.  Matt Watters and Pete Marchineck combined to throw a scoreless eighth.
  • For Georgia Southern, Austin Thompson reached base four times in a 3-for-4 day, having a double, walk and RBI.  Starter Ben Johnson went five innings with four runs and six strikeouts.  The first reliever, Jaylen Paden (1-1), got the win with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.  Nick Jones picked up his third save, throwing the final 1.1 innings with three strikeouts.
How It Happened:
  • Georgia Southern got the first run in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly.  Towson got a tie game in the following half-inning as Danny Becerra reached third on a pair of errors, then Billy Godrick brought him home on a bunt single to third.
  • A Noah Searcy RBI single in the third and an Austin Thompson bases loaded walk in the fourth put the home team back ahead.  In the top of the fifth, Towson got the bats going with one out, beginning with a Trent Gast-Woodard double and a Jake Lysaght single to put runners on the corners.  Becerra belted a double to the right-center gap to score a run, then Godrick brought home Lysaght on a sacrifice fly.  Noah Cabrera followed with a single to left, scoring Becerra and giving Towson a 4-3 lead.
  • Towson held off GSU in the fifth, but the Eagles went back ahead in the sixth with a two-run, two-out double by Noah Ledford.
  • In the top of the seventh, Towson loaded the bases with two out.  Brandon Austin knocked a single into right to bring in Lysaght and tie the game.  The next half-inning, GSU got the run back on a wild pitch to lead 6-5.
  • Towson attempted a rally in the ninth, getting two on from an error and a walk.  The Tigers got the runners up a base with two outs, but a strikeout ended the inning with GSU winning 6-5.
