RICHMOND, Va. – The Towson University baseball team nearly split its doubleheader at Richmond on Saturday, but fell in walk-off in game one 10-9 then fell in game two 11-3.
Towson (10-20) had a 9-6 lead after seven-and-a-half innings at Richmond (11-6) in game one, with the Spiders coming back to win. Richmond won the second game, scoring 10 runs in the first four innings.
Key Stats:
- Bryce Frederick earned his second home run of the season, a two-run blast in the first game, finishing the day 3-for-7 with two runs and three RBI. Noah Cabrera was 2-for-5, having a run, RBI and hit-by-pitch.
- On the pitching side, Josh Seils had a no-decision in game one with six innings thrown with six runs, just four earned. The loss went to reliever Jake Pecilunas (1-3), who had two runs in two-thirds in the ninth inning. In game two, the loss went to starter Nick Janowicz (2-1), having eight runs and two strikeouts in 2.2 innings.
- For Richmond, Jared Sprague-Lott combined to be 5-for-5, notching three RBI. Reliever Jordan Schulefand (5-0) got the win in game one with a scoreless ninth while game two starter Jacob Marcus (3-1) picked up the victory, throwing six innings with a run and 10 strikeouts.
How It Happened (Game 1):
- Towson took advantage of a first inning-opening Danny Becerra single and Billy Godrick hit-by-pitch. After a sacrifice bunt by Nolan Young, Noah Cabrera hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Becerra and put Towson up 1-0.
- Similar to inning one, Towson used a walk, single and sacrifice bunt to get second and third. With two away, Becerra roped a single to left to bring in two and make it 3-0 Towson.
- Aided by two fielding errors, Richmond tied the game up with three runs in the bottom of the second.
- The Tigers got back the lead in the top of the fourth. With Brandon Austin hitting a two-out double, Jacob Terao knocked him in with a single to left to send Towson up 4-3.
- With one out in the top of the fifth, Towson picked up second and third with one out. Javon Fields blasted a double down the left field line to bring in the two runners, then he took third on a passed ball. Two batters later, Bryce Frederick put down a bunt for a sacrifice as Fields scored, giving Towson a 7-3 advantage.
- Towson kept that four-run lead until the bottom of the sixth as Richmond used a single, two doubles, a walk and a sacrifice bunt to plate three and pull within one.
- Towson got two back in a big way in the following half-inning. With Burke Camper on first, Frederick knocked a pitch over the left-center field fence for a two-run home run. Towson lead 9-6.
- Into the bottom of the eighth, a two-out RBI single, then an RBI fielder's choice, brought Richmond to within one.
- Richmond got first and second with one out in the bottom of the ninth. Towson struck out the next batter, but Aidan Mathes hit a double to the right-center gap to bring in two runs for the 10-9 walk-off.
How It Happened (Game 2):
- Towson again got on the scoreboard first as the Tigers got runners on the corners with two outs. A wild pitch allowed Billy Godrick to score to push Towson up 1-0.
- Richmond jumped on Towson's pitching early with multiple runs in the first four innings, including a couple of two-run doubles, to lead 10-1 after four frames.
- Matt Watters and Nick Ramanjulu held Richmond to just one run in innings five through eight. In the ninth, Alex Parker led off with a single, then with one out, Jake Lysaght reached on an error. Danny Becerra hit a double down the left field line for a run, then Matt Arceo had an RBI ground out. Towson could not get closer and fell 11-3.
