TOWSON, Md. – The Towson University baseball team scored five runs in the opening inning against Richmond but could not hold the advantage in a 14-6 defeat at home.
Towson (10-21) rallied for five runs in the opening inning, capped by a
Trent Gast-Woodard double off the right field corner. Richmond (14-6) countered with multiple runs in each the third, fourth and seventh innings for the victory.
Key Stats:
- Trent Gast-Woodard reached base in all three plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with a two-run double, a single and a walk. Danny Becerra was 2-for-5 in the leadoff spot, scoring a run.
- On the mound, starting pitcher Danny Madden had a no decision, going three innings with five runs, four earned, and three strikeouts. Reliever Kody Reeser (1-3) got the loss after pitching the fourth with three unearned runs and a trio of strikeouts.
- For Richmond, Jared Sprague-Lott hit a three-run home run, finishing 3-for-4 with five RBI and a walk. Starter Colby Wyatt did not get a decision, going four innings with five runs and three strikeouts. The next reliever, Eli Kimbell (1-0), got the victory, throwing two scoreless with four strikeouts.
How It Happened:
- Richmond got two hits and three free passes in the top of the first, resulting in three runs.
- Towson responded in a big way in the bottom of the first. With one on and one out, Billy Godrick belted a ball down the right field line for a double, scoring Danny Becerra. Noah Cabrera had a bunt single to short, then Javon Fields walked to load the bases. Bryce Frederick reached on an error to bring in a run and keep the bases loaded. Next pitch, Trent Gast-Woodard hit a ball off the right-field corner fence for a two-run double, giving Towson the lead 5-3.
- Danny Madden pitched a scoreless second inning, but in the top of third, Richmond walked the bases loaded, using a fielder's choice error and sacrifice fly to plate two and tie the game at 5-5.
- Richmond added three more runs in the top of the fourth, reaching on three consecutive batters capped by a reach on error for a run, then a two-run single by Jared Sprague-Lott made it 8-5 Spiders.
- Austin Weber threw a scoreless sixth, but the Spiders put on six more in the seventh to lead 14-5.
- Towson tried a final rally in the ninth, with Jake Lysaght leading off with a walk, then Becerra singling to put runners on the corners. Matt Arceo lined a single through the left side to score Lysaght, but Towson could not get closer and fell 14-6.
Inside the Numbers:
- Noah Cabrera increased his hitting streak to seven games, going 1-for-5 with a run scored. Javon Fields had his six-game hitting streak snapped, but has reached base his last seven games.
