Tigers Take Down No. 17/No. 15 Hofstra in Midweek Clash

TOWSON, Md. -- A strong first half and a big defensive push late helped the Towson University men's lacrosse team knock off No. 17/No. 15 Hofstra University in a Tuesday afternoon clash at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium.

Towson (5-6, 2-3 CAA) picked up its second-straight Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) win, backed by four-goal showing from redshirt senior attackman Brody McLean, while Jake McLean, no relation, posted a season-best two goals from the midfield. Shane Brennan made 14 saves in the Tigers' fourth home win of the season.

Hofstra (6-3, 3-2 CAA) was led by four points from Ryan Tierney (3g, 1a) with Justin Sykes added two goals. Brian Herber won 15 of the game's 20 draws, snatching up nine ground balls along the way.

How it Happened
  • Towson jumped out to a fast 3-0 lead in the first 10 minutes of the game as Carson Gaeger scored a back-handed goal on the crease, followed by markers from Ryan Swain and Brody McLean. Swain assisted on Brody McLean's first of the day at 5:45 of the first.
  • Colton Rudd broke up the run for Hofstra, getting the final goal of the first quarter with 97 seconds left in the frame.
  • Brody McLean put away his second of the afternoon two minutes into the second quarter before Tierney cut Towson's lead in half, 4-2, with 10:44 to go in the half.
  • Jake McLean and Austin Stewart combined for back-to-back goals to extend the lead back out to four with 4:49 to go. Alex Reid fed Stewart for the 6-2 lead. Again Tierney cut the lead in half but it was Brody McLean, completing the hat trick, with the final goal of the second quarter with Alex Reid on the back end and a 7-3 halftime lead.
  • Ninety seconds into the fresh stanza, Andrew Milani finished a feed from Tim Montgomery for a five-goal Tiger advantage. Midway into the third quarter, Lynskey scored on the extra man on Tienery's assist, the last goal for either side in the third quarter.
  • Brody McLean potted his fourth goal of the day, which goes in as the game-winner, less than a minute into the fourth quarter, followed by Jake McLean's second on a dish from Gaeger at 6:34 of the fourth and a 10-4 Towson lead.
  • The Pride reeled off four unanswered goals over the final six minutes, trimming Towson's lead to just two with 58 seconds left, but Towson's early lead helped the Tigers out-last the Pride in a revenge win.
Behind the Numbers
  • Both teams took 36 shots, including 23 in the first half from the Tigers. Hofstra took 21 attempts in the second half.
