Toneygay homers as Towson Drops two to Drexel

PHILADELPHIA - The Towson University softball team battled hard but fell in Friday's doubleheader to Drexel inside the Drexel Softball Stadium.

Linsdey Toneygay hit her third homerun of the season as Towson (11-14, 0-8 CAA) fell 5-3 to Drexel (17-5, 6-2 CAA) in game one of Friday's doubleheader. Nicole Kidwiler led the way going 3-for-4 for the Tigers.

A late rally for the Tigers fell short in game two as Drexel pulled away with a 8-5 lead.

How it Happened – Game 1
  • Lauren Ringhiser reached base on a single through the left side in top of the second. Toneygay homered to the right center giving the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
  • Drexel cut into the lead in the bottom of the second.
  • The Dragon took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Elena Woulie and a single by Linda Rush.
  • Rush hit a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-2 lead.
  • Nicole Kidwiler had a lead-off double in the top of the seventh and scored on a fly-out to right field by Mackenzie Lake to make the final score 5-3.
Inside the Numbers – Game 1
  • Kidwiler had a season-high three hits in the game. She also was the lone Tiger with one double.
  • Ringhiser had two hits and two different Tigers had one hit apiece.
  • Melissa Abrahamian moves to 4-6 on the season after throwing 6 innings with two strikeouts.
How it Happened – Game 2
  • Drexel took an early 1-0 lead on a RBI single by Kristi DiMeo in the bottom of the first.
  • The Dragons add five more runs in the bottom of the second to go up 6-0.
  • Towson cut into Drexel's lead after a single up the middle by Kidwiler scored Gracyn Houmis. Then a two-run RBI by Toneygay made the score 6-3 in the top of the third.
  • Linda Rush hit a two-run homer to give Drexel an 8-3 lead in the bottom of the fourth.
  • The Tigers kept fighting; in the bottom of the sixth Ringhiser scored on a wild pitch and Julia Jackson hit an RBI single to make the final score 8-5.
Inside the Numbers – Game 2
  • Toneygay added two more hits to her stat line.
  • Jackson had two hits as well.
  • Kidwiler and Ringhiser had one hit apiece.
  • Jackson started the game for Towson throwing 4 innings with one strikeout and moves to 5-4 on the season.
  • Madeline Harris threw 2 innings with three strikeouts.
  • Towson faced three different pitchers.

The Tigers conclude the series against Drexel tomorrow, April 17 inside the Drexel Tiger Softball Stadium. The game is slated for a 3 p.m. start.
