Godrick Earns Two Game-Winning Hits as Towson Baseball Sweeps vs. Fordham

TOWSON, Md. – Tasked with taking on two of the best starting pitchers in the Atlantic 10 Conference, the Towson University baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep over Fordham on Saturday, walking off in game one 3-2 and taking game two 5-3.

Billy Godrick, facing a team that he helped win the 2019 Atlantic 10 title, had the game-winning hits in both games for Towson (13-21), including the walk-off RBI single in game one and the go-ahead RBI double in the seventh inning of game two vs. Fordham (16-9).

The Towson bullpen shined in this doubleheader, combining for nine innings, both victories, a save, no runs, two hits and seven strikeouts.

Key Stats:
  • Billy Godrick finished the day at 2-for-4 with a double, two RBI and three walks.  Brandon Austin hit his second home run of the season, a two-run blast in game two, finishing that contest 2-for-4 with three RBI.  Jake Lysaght was 2-for-4 combined with a run, RBI and walk while Burke Camper concluded 2-for-5 with a double and a pair of walks.
  • On the pitching mound, Josh Seils took a no-hitter into the sixth before being removed, going five+ innings with two runs and a strikeout.  Kody Reeser (2-3) took over in game one and got the win with four scoreless innings, one hit and four Ks.  Seils and Reeser held Fordham to one hit in game one.  Starter Nick Janowicz also got a no-decision off four innings in game two with three runs and a strikeout.  Cam Clark pitched two scoreless innings in relief, followed by Jake Pecilunas (2-3) going 1.2 innings scoreless.  Austin Weber picked up his third save of the year with one-and-a-third scoreless to finish.
  • For Fordham, Chris Genaro broke up Towson's no-hit bid in the seventh of game one while Nick Labella went 3-for-4 with two runs in game two.  Neither starter won their games: Matt Mikulski went four innings with no runs and eight strikeouts in game one while Garrett Crowley pitched five innings in game two, allowing three runs and striking out five.  The losses went to Declan Lavelle (1-2), with two innings, two unearned runs and a pair of strikeouts in game one, and Brooks Ey (0-2), with a pair of innings and strikeouts plus a run.
How It Happened (Game 1):
  • Josh Seils took the hill with a tall task with his counterpart, Matt Mikulski, being a member of the Golden Spikes Award List.  Seils held through the first five innings without any hits, but Fordham got a run in the top of the third, loading the bases on walks and getting a score off a double play.
  • Bottom of the fifth, Towson got two on with two out.  The catcher tried to pick off a runner, throwing into the outfield.  Billy Godrick raced home and scored, tying the game at 1-1.
  • Fordham got the run back in the following half-inning, again scoring on bases loaded double play ball to go up 2-1.  Towson held the no-hitter into the seventh until Chris Genaro got a two-out single to right.
  • In the bottom of the eighth, Towson picked up first and second.  Noah Cabrera broke for third and stole the base, and on a subsequent throwing error, took home to tie the game.
  • Bottom of the ninth, Towson got the bases loaded with nobody out.  Fordham defended on the first batter with a five-man infield to get an out at the plate.  Next batter, Godrick roped a single to right to bring in a run and send Towson to a 3-2 walk-off victory.
How It Happened (Game 2):
  • Following a scoreless first inning for Nick Janowicz, in the second, Nick Labella singled, took second on a sac bunt and got the next two bases on wild pitches to send Fordham up 1-0.
  • Towson got its first run in the next half-inning, getting the bases loaded.  With one out, Jake Lysaght hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Burke Camper and tying the score.
  • Fordham retook the lead with RBI hits in the second and third innings to go up 3-1.
  • Javon Fields walked and took second on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth.  With two out, Brandon Austin blasted a pitch over the left-center field fence for a two-run home run, tying the game at 3-3.
  • Lysaght began the bottom of the seventh with a single, taking second on a sacrifice bunt.  Billy Godrick came through again with an RBI double over the left-fielder's head, scoring Lysaght and giving Towson the lead 4-3.
  • Next inning, Towson added insurance, again from the bat of Austin.  With Nick Brown on second and two out, Austin reached out and knocked a ball down the left field line for a double and an RBI for a 5-3 Towson lead.  Austin Weber went through the ninth 1-2-3 as Towson took the victory 5-3 for the doubleheader sweep.
